Get the Hobbico 60watt model, best 8.99 I spent.... It's what goes to the track with me... If you want to spend a lot more, get a Hakko 936.... I leave my Hakko home...

I can't speak for the Hobbico one, but I LOVE my Hakko 936 and would highly recommend it.

Honestly, my 936 is just one more thing to get broken in transit, plus it isn't small...

He has less than 50 to spend... Buy 5 of the hobbico irons and be done.... He's not going to find anything else decent (new) for under 50....

My 936 goes with me to track.....

For a little more you can have one of these http://www.hobbyshopper.com/

or you can get one of these for about $35 if you want just an iron.

Check out the Hakko 456....HOT, with a nice sized tip for doing batteries, but still small enough to work with motors etc...:D
