I set the timing on my d3.5 to 15* and played with the gearing until I got the temps and top end speed I needed for my home track. This thing is the fastest car on the track and has reset track records twice. Believe me if you get the gearing and timing working in unison there is no need to modify the endbell at all. That will only lead to nuclear meltdown in a hurry. Have watched two go that route when they first came out. Three buy one guy all in one nights racing. Temps run 140 to 160 all night.

I was there...lol!. We were all turning 8.5-8.7 sec laps in 13.5 Blinky WGT. You put in the D3.5 and started turning 8.3-8.5's

BTW, I wasn't saying you need to modify the D3.5. Just noting the Revtechs allowed for more timing than the D3's.

I'm running a D3.5 21.5 in the local USGT class and need some gearing help. Any suggestions on a recommended FDR and endbel timing setting I should try?

Thanks for your input!

Does the D3 at the 0 timing mark have any built in timing??

Sorry for the newb questions, getting back again into electric TC.
The only thing I had to do was rotate the mounting plate on the motor to move the solder tabs on my pan cars. The cooling slot eliminated one of the holes.

I just received mine from Express Motorsports (High Torque rotor) and noticed it came with the end bell timing set at 25 degrees.

I did a few tests on my brushless motor tester (all end bells at 0 degrees) and found that the claimed 3500kv is a load of s#it.

These tests are all at 6 Volts no load.

Duo 3.5 (Express) 13559rpm 1A draw
Turnigy Trackstar 17.5 (Silver) 13679rpm 0.7A draw
Dualsky Track and Field 17.5 14399rpm 1.6A draw
Trinity Monster Horsepower 3 17.5 14399rpm 0.6A draw

So at least on initial bench testing it has the lowest rpm of the lot and a 4 yr old Dualsky seems to have more power.

Not sure it's worth the $95 yet.

Based on the fact that the D3.5 is winning every spec motor class race in the US and everyone at my home track that has tried them have immediatly gone faster I would say your testing methods are not generating meaningful results.

I agree, i went .1-.2 faster than my Thunder Power and that's not even with a 12.5 torque rotor, just the standard broadband.

It would be interesting if you can test all your motors with a 20-30amp load and see which produces the highest RPM.

If your using the HT rotor your going to get less rpm anyway. Try it with the stock 12.3 broad rotor and you will have more RPM. It will likely have the same if not a little more rpm then the D3. The benefit of these motors was you could gear them taller to get more speed but not lose any low end punch. As well as running cooler. Your test isn't really equal unless all of the motors have a HT rotor.

Testing without a load (and tuning) is about as effective as dropping them from the same height to decide which one is faster....

And zero is not always "zero". For some zero = 30 degrees. For others 20, etc.

^This.

And John Tag from eXpress can tune a motor. Trust me.

Gear that motor properly, and it will run great for you.

Did Roar make these motors not legal now?

Is there any progress on these motors becoming roar legal again in 17.5? My 90 dollar paperweight would like to have its second run!
