Cleaning up Cleaning Putty
What's the antidote for cleaning putty? I have a diff built with it that I need to rebuild. Thanks.

new diff

That's what I was afraid of.

You can clean it out but it's quite tedious... when I've done it I've tried to soak it in motor spray...which makes a different sort of mess entirely but is managable.
... but it does take some time and I'm sure the motor spray isn't good for any oring/seals in the gear diff...so personally I would leave that gear diff for putty only applications as it might no longer hold oil that well due to compromised orings. |

I use fresh cleaning putty to clean it out. Just press it in and it will progressively come off.

I've tried using new cleaning putty. I think the old has broken down too much. Or the fact that I added a few drops of shock oil turned it into a consistency that won't bond well with the new.
I will try the freezing. Its really just the casing that is an issue so I can get a new casing if it doesn't work. Gonna switch to a spool for a bit anyway but just wanna have it available if necessary. Thanks all! |
Try lighter fluid and a stiff plastic brush. That's what I used, and I was mixing shock oil with the putty as well.

I used WD40 to break it down then blast it with motor spray.
