How can I slow an RC down for my son?
My son is 5 years old and I would love to get him something he could drive and learn how to eventually race. I had a couple of ideas but would appreciate your imput. Here are my ideas:
- stock 540 motor
- a big pinion
- loosening a slipper or belt if you have one
- 4 cell battery pack
I think some ESC's you can limit the throttle but I am unsure which ones. What have you guys done?

That stuff looks good, but I'd use a small pinion to limit top speed and keep the motor from cooking. Also, if your radio has endpoint adjustments, turn down the throttle. Hope this helps

Yep, setting the epa for the throttle would be quickest easiest way. But if you don't have a radio with epa, the four cell battery is probably your next best option. Although I bet you'd be surprised how fast he learns to control it even without making any changes.

I would start him out with something...
from Radio Shack. At age 5 they can be hard on stuff and he may not like it.

My little brother is only 4 and we gave him my dads mini t and he has gotten preaty good but not good enuf to race yet. then again there is a 5year old kid at our club who can drive like nothing iv ever seen. he currently runs with the level 2 drivers(1 is begginers and 4 is expert).

If your radio does not have EPA you can do like we did with my Nephew and his slot cars.....we installed a stop behind the trigger so he could never pull full power. You can do this a couple ways put something on the back side of the trigger or install a screw behind the trigger then turn it in for when he wants to go faster and has more control ability. All you are doing is limiting the trigger throw so he can not pull full power. Then that way you are not left with getting stuff that you will not use later to slow the car down. Good luck

I turned down the epa on my 5 year old son's car, it's easy to do when he's using one of my FM radios with all the bells and whistles though....

My son has been racing since he was 5, one and a half years ago. I used the EPA on the throttle to limit the speed and negative expo on the steering to limit the responce. As he progressed I increased both. At the end of this last season he was up to 90% throttle and expo was only at -15%. He was able to win the B main of novice several times and even finish mid way in the A a few times too.
He is in the middle of the drivers stand and I am sitting next to him. If I remeber correctly he won this main.

BTW that's my Dad at the end of the drivers stand. He doesn't race but enjoys watching and helping marshal.
