This shock thing is just funny. The customers keep complaining about them. Xray keep saying that "the shocks working perfect all the team drivers use them", they also posted a minimanual how to assemble them correctly on their forum.
But those shocks are suck. Those are Serpent shocks designed for Nitro cars. And the design is 5-8 years old (at least). Its a shame on Xray.
You can improve the shocks using a pro4 shock membrane instead of the stock one or the Serpent counterpart. Those are softer and work better. You also should use the foam inserts.
They say the alu shock bodies are much smoother. I've never tested it but probably true but I think a hard hit on the back - which would just crack the plastic ones - can bend them easily.
Regarding your tamiya shock question, you can easily mount them using the 5mm ball ends xray use mounting the rear sway bars to the lower arm. (sold also separately in a pack of 6). They will be a little tight in the beginning but they will wear in.
For the bottom end you can use the Xray lower mounting parts but in this case you have to use the xray shock plate instead of the fancy-dancy tamiya.
I saw drivers using pro4 shocks in the car but I don't have a clue how they mounted them.

I don't care what those shocks just won, it helps not too much for me (averagejoe) who spent hours to try to fix them. Then after 6-9 packs fix them again. I have three sets of them (fourth is comming with the new kit) if you need some.
The other problem is that they are too long and the car has to have high shock towers just to make them fit. And they say on the box of the new kit "lowest center of gravity" - they've probably never seen a Corally RDX or a TRF. Those have lower CG than the new Xray.
However I still think this is one of the best car on the market today but as the company gets bigger and bigger they take care less and less.
I say to you guys: here is a new kit (regardless of the brand) for 370$ buy it AND if you want to set it up according the BASIC setup for foam buy the following: wide topdeck (~30$), XRC chassis (~80$), 4.5 C-hub (~2x5$), violet springs for front (~12$) (you must buy four of course) purple springs for rear (~12$) foam inserts (~2.50$) and and Orings (~2$) for shock a front anti-roll bar set (~20$) (2.0mm sway bar included) 0.9mm anti sway bar (~8$), the optional suspension holder (~2$), the foam shock tower (~18$) and the rear stands for the top deck (~8$). It is just about ~200$ not a big deal. Would you buy it??? Yes because it is xray and they have the best marketing in the whole RC business.

If you dont like it dont buy one.
This weekend totally convinced me that xrays are the best car on the market.
I went to the carpet nats with a borrowed xray that I have only driven 2 weekends. I turned the 8th fastest run all weekend with this borrowed car and in that run the 2nd fastest stock lap of the weekend. The car would of been in the show if it wasnt for driver failure and traffic problems.
The shocks once built correctly are smooth as BUTTER and stay that way for a long time. The plasic bodies make them super light and are cheap to replace. Why change something that works that well?
I'm anxiously awaiting my LHS to call me and say my new XRay is in.

Marketing can only take you so far....you have to have a good product too. As Peter said, the car has won 4 major titles in less than 2 months...not too shabby.
P.S. What exactly is the problem you are having with your shocks?
