Default PocketPC, Palm and other Handheld Software for RC

Hi everyone, I just thought I'd like to hear thoughts and comments from hobbyists and manufacturers on making more software for PDAs.

We're living in times when PDAs are getting cheap and definately much more affordable and portable than laptops and PCs. For the price of a typical charger anyone can get hold of a PDA of sorts.

I foresee many hobbyists and racers in future with a PDA in a dock beside their chargers, displaying live graphs of the charge curves. I see people programming their ESCs with the PDAs or downloading telemetry info from their cars after their run. Other racers would be calculating rollouts or even be updating their electronic setup sheets for printing out later or emailing out to friends. Many await possibilities await.

I was just wondering if any manufacturers are pushing their software for their ESCs, chargers and various equipments on PDAs.

Personally I have KO's line of VFS escs. I was surprised there wasnt a PDA version of their ICS software yet as it would really make it easier for everyone who uses it round the world.

Anyone have any comments on this?

i do have gear charts and laptimer in my ipaq. apart from worrying if someone might slip away with it at track, pda is quite useful. however u need a buddy to keep the lap timing up. cheap calculator can always do the earlier thing and most handphones now also have basic lap timing capability

Actually your post got me thinking.... the new Nintendo DS would be great for this, if anyone who knew how to work with the electronics and software portion..... the DS is built to be able to act as a PDA, gaming system, and interface with other machines.... Sounds like the perfect pit buddy to me....lol

I have roll out spreadsheets and setup sheets in my PDA. I also use it to keep a list of stuff I need to buy at the LHS.

Must be with some USB-cable or other cable, or put the info on a memorycard if the PDA suports them..

Would be great with GPS in the PDA too. No more spinning around searching for those damn track i've never been too

I currently use a pda to store set ups and use the pocket excel to do rollout calculations.

Many people ask about gearing so I have a Excel spread sheet set up with most car's internal gear ratio. So I can just plug in spur/pinion and a comprable ratio.

What would be really nice if Orion's lap counter could interface with a pda. then you could see multiple lap times and graphing.

Also if the CE gfx could interface would a pda it would be helpful for battery maint./monitoring.

Sounds great... but until then, a second hand laptop will be better... harder to steal too...

I've got one for the Pocket PC up there. Working on a new version that will be better and might be done in a few weeks.

you can interface a turbo 35 with a palm pilot. Older palms with serial connections are infact null modem devices, and thus with a gender changer adapter you can connect them to the turbo. You just need a simple terminal program (there are many for the palm os) and the charger will output to the palm as if it were a pc. It is an easy way to add the graphing functionality of a gfx to an older turbo. Palm IIIs can be had for as little as $20 now and the gender changer is like a couple bucks at radio shack.

Entropy,

I totally agree with you. The PPC's have become pretty darn powerful and cheap.

I would like to use mine at the track for more than just storing setups.
