Home-Made Motor drops?
 

Iam relatively new to electric rc cars. Ive been into nitro for awhile though.

The question is. I have an electric motor and no drops. I hear you need break in drops and comm drops or something. Basically a lube for the engine, correct.

Im wondering what can be used instead of these exspensive products. I have like 3-1 , silicone spray , trinity bearing lube and other things.

What can be used as an alternative the speicific products made for these. I really dont have the money to buy all these drops.

So what can be used in its place. Also where do I put it and how do I take care of the motor otherwise.

You DON'T Need any sort of drops.... And don't listen to whoever told you that ever again....

As far as bearing are concern I uses Mobil 1 Oil (0W-30). 1 Quart, per my calulation it will last me about 276 years hahaha.

For the comm drop I never use them. But it is smell like Kerozine though.

I think it was trinitys website that states it needs all these drops to break a motor in.

Well thanks for that input. I feel better now. Is there anything I can do to help it out in between runs. Like cleaning it with air or something?

I have found break in drops help to seat the brushes during break in, but comm drops absolutly do nothing, and in some cases drop the performance of your motor.

So motor drops are basically "snake oil"? Shame on those companys. Also I might have misrefered to it. Thats all the oil type products they sell for electric motors right?

But I did oil the bearings with trinity bearing oil. That stuff does work nicely. Also had it from my nitro.

Also one final question. Do motors make a clicking kind of sound. Kinda like something is off-sided on the motor or on and off power. Im wondering if the sound my motor gives off is just how it is or if there is a balance issue. Maybe the tire or shafts slop making this...but im just wondering.

Are drops necessary for break in or for running a motor? Not at all. But to say they are useless or snake oil is not correct either. While there are some drops that do absolutly nothing. There are many that actually work and work rather well...and of couse some do work better than others. There are drops that help with improving torque, there are those that increase RPM and some even help to prolong the time in between motor rebuilds by helping to reduce comm wear.

If you have any doubt about drops, all you have to do is buy one bottle of Tribo. from my experience with everything from sstocks to hot mods, it helped to increase RPM, but most noticalbe is the increase in torque and reduced comm wear. I have never heard of anyone that actually used this product and gave it a chance say that it didn't work or that they didn't like it.

The one thing that many people do wrong with comm drops (IMO) is mix them. Don't break the motor in using one kind of drop and then use another kind to run the motor. Don't use one kind of drop for one run and another brand on the next run to see which one is faster. Normally mixing different brand drops on the same motor with out rebuilding just gums up the comm and brushes. If you use comm drops on a motor stick with that brand or stop using them all together until the motor is rebuilt or at the very least cleaned out very good.

Try Tribo once and you will have no doubt that comm drops can and do work. Tribo is expensive when compared to other brands...about $8.00 for a bottle but that was the price i paid when bought it three years ago. Three years on the same bottle so it is money well spent. One drop of the stuff goes a long way.

I did a comm drop shootout a few months back for the magazine. Do comm drops make a difference? Yes. Do they all make a positive difference? NO!

Here's the results from the 19T motor tests. These show the first run of results that were done on a Fantom dyno. I also did a series of these tests on some stock motors as well.

With these results and the results from the stock motor tests I would stay away from Tribo. They tended to either do nothing for performance or in some tests the results were worse after the Tribo was applied. If you're looking for drops, Hurricane Red or Blue, Finishline, Zubak, or Slick/Zero Drops were consistantly top performers.

Again, Shane, if you want I'll edit this post but I think this speaks directly to the nature of this thread.

comm drops are good for the motors if you use the right thing. EDM fluid...thats what you need. Good for heat, wear, and conductivity

Just go to the auto parts store and get a bottle of prolong.... Same stuff....

Wow, I always heard that Tribo was like the bees knees. Ahh well, I've never been able to get Tribo due to shipping demands with ID etc, so I've only just ordered some Zubak through a trusted supplier. I am looking forward to getting some extra ponies with that!! Especially with the new EA F-Brushes. The Zubak is supposed to work really well with those brushes, for whatever reason.

Those F brushes are awesome! I got some about a month ago and they have similar performance to the Hurricane golds but less wear on the comm and brushes. One thing we noticed though is that they increase RPM a lot but the power isn't as good as with a gold or a 767
