Default Newbie question for onroad guys!!

Newbie question for onroad guys! My son is 12 and races offroad 2wd buggy. He has raced stadium truck, short course, and 2wd buugy off and on since about 6. I want to get him something to run a vta at our new local track. What would be a good starting point without breaking the bank to get him going? He might like onroad and he may not. We've only raced offroad so any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Pick up something used from the fs section or see if one of the locals will let you run their car or backup car for a bit and see what he thinks.

A AE TC3 or 4 would be a good car, another option for new would be an Xray T3R.

I'm not an AE fan per say, but, parts support is great and if you pick up a nice used car and decide you don't like it, you can easily resell it for the same or close to the same amount you paid. AE cars hold their value. That said, I would personally prefer an Xray or something else. Losi or Hot bodies for instance. See what the locals are doing and ask questions

Tamiya TA05v2 or the newer TA06 gets my vote... great car out of the box with lots of headroom if you want to go faster.

TC3 or TC4 Lots of parts are available and they can take a beating.

I ran a Losi JRXS for the longest. I purchased the new AE TC6 because of the parts support. If you are looking for a good VTA car, I would look at an AE TC3, TC4, or TC5. All are good cars without breaking the bank. If built right the TC3 is almost a tank, heavy but very strong. The best thing to do is look at what the locals are running and go with something like that, you will setup help and parts help.

I run a JRX-S type R in VTA and I honestly don't think I've ever broken anything on it in about the 8 months I've been racing. Now my 17.5 JRX, that's a different story, but in VTA it's solid.

See if anyone at your local track has something used for sale. Ask what the majority of people are running, and look in the For Sale forum here for one. That way, you can get setup help, and people may have parts when you don't.

Almost any touring car can make a decent VTA car.

Thank you to all, just trying to get an idea of what to look at in the for sale threads and what would be most durable, dependable, and still fast.

Not many shops carry parts for Xray in the US.

True, but enough people race them that you can usually bum a spare part off someone on race day if you have to, then go order it online.

I started off with a TC3 and if you go that route be sure to get the RPM wide front bumper and get some nerf wings to protect the rear arms. On my first outing with the TC3 which was a 1000 lap enduro I broke 4 rear arms. After I put on those rear nerf wings I never broke another one.

I payed $75 for a VTA roller with a 21.5 SS motor and the adjustable shocks, so shop around till you find a good deal.

A Main, Ashford Hobby, Nexus Racing, Stormer, and Superior Hobbies all carry XRay stuff, as well as the Importer/Distributor, RC America.

Look at a sakura zero s. 100 brand new and very capable out of the box. it has tons of upgrades if he decides to stay with it. There won't be a need to get another car later You can just build the s model into a full blown zero. Check out the sakura zero s thread.

I have a very nice used Corally RDX I've been wanting to sell for someone to get into VTA. Add electronics, body, wheels and tires, and its ready. Has all the spares you'll ever need. I'll send you a PM with pics and details if your interested. I raced it myself for a long time in VTA and it was fantastic. Motivated to sell so we can work out a good price.
