Default speed trap idea

Hey,
I was thinking of doing a speed trap to get more accurate speeds of my car. Right now I use the vsm (which is pretty accurate, but I would like to try something else).

My idea was to put the sensor for the vsm so it is facing the ground (about 1-3mm off the ground), I would then put magnetic strips across the running area (about 2-10 feet apart, all the same though). I would set the vsm to the distance from one magnet strip to the other. As the car goes over the magnets it reads them and converts it to mph.

Do you guys think this would work?

I may try limiting my esc to hit a low top speed (with the magnet on my car, then with it on the road like I explained above), to see if it is accurate.

Also, how many strips do you guys think I'll need in order to get an accurate reading?

(I haven't been able to do any speed runs with my micro because of basketball practice and games. I have a game/practice 6 days a week. I do get some days off, so I'm trying to set some runs in. I already have the car running good with no glitching that I know of.)

Thanks for the help.

Also, I'm going to use 1/32 inch thick strips (the magnet is 1/2 inch wide and 50 feet long, and it's only $20).

Well I cannot help with the techincal stuff, but there are some advantages to this that may be useful for all of us.

There are many forms of 1:1 racing which use split times to estimate a drivers progress around the entire circuit. F1 is notorious for these, making the qualifying runs very suspenseful in real time.

If the r/c community had split times, that would help drivers better understand which portions of the track they were strong on, and likewise, which portion of the track they were weak on.

Default Here we go again......

We thought you were done after your posts were moved to the chat forum and after you insulted the intelegence of everyone who replied to you and finally after your threads were shut down by futureal ............... Your idea like all of them will not work as when your micro hits the magnet at your claimed 60+mph it will crash and burn .

Get a Radar gun!!!!!! You can find cheap sport models on ebay..... There is much more to this hobby that how fast you can go... That is unless you have a nitro/electric rail....

How acurate do you really need to be.

All you really want is an idea dont you?

mark out some distance, time how long it takes to get from start to finish, calculate speed. shouldnt be to hard

I'm a retired Highway cop... I've clocked everything and anything you can think of with various radar guns.... They are accurate.... Rain falls at 12mph....

Set a fixed distance of 100'. Accelerate 50' before the "speed trap". Have a friend with a stopwatch start at first gate and stop at 2nd gate.

Perform test 6 times....throw out 2 highest and 2 lowest.

Do math.

Done.
