Spur & Pinion Gears for X-Ray T1FK
 

I'm looking to purchase a new spur gear and a few different size pinion gears for my car, but I can't find the X-Ray brand anyplace for the sizes I want. Does it matter if I use another brand of spurs like the HPI or Kimbrough on my car?

Before anyone blast me, I searched the x-ray thread last night and it confused me more than it helped.

You don't need to purchase XRay brand spurs or pinions.

You can use pinions from any company you want as long as the pitch is the same (e.g. 48pitch Spur, you need 48pitch pinion; 64 pitch Spur, you need 64pitch pinion)

For Spurs you can use Kimbrough spurs which bolt right up or PRS gears will fit (http://www.precisionracingsystems.com/).

Kimbrough will work fine for your application and are superb quality. Just get the same pitch you are currently using. As for pinions, any company will work in the same pitch you are using.

Since you guys are so helpful, I'll ask this question that's been on my mind. What's the deal with the pitch? What exactly does it mean to have a 48P or 64P spur? Is either better than the other?

All other brands will work fine. Precision Racing Systems in my opinion is probably the best. They make some larger size spur gears that others don't.

As far as pitch goes 48 vs 64: 64 Pitch lets you fine tune your gear ratio a little better. It is also a little more delicate then 48 Pitch since the teeth are smaller.

I've used Kimbrough Spurs and Robinson Racing pinions with great success. But IMO Precision Spurs and Pinions are the best in the industry currently. I bought some and they're flawless :)

And the diffrence between 48 pitch and 64 pitch is the amount of teeth on the gears. On a 48 pitch spur gear, it will have 48 teeth on a 1" diameter gear. That same 1" spur gear in 64 pitch will have 64 teeth. More teeth means more gear combinations for fine tuning your gear ratios. Some people use 48 tooth gears outdoors as they say they're more robust and stronger than 64 pitch. I've never had problems running 64 pitch outdoors with my Xray. Some people say 64 pitch makes a smoother drive train and quieter due to the smaller rise of the teeth. That's debatable too.

I just called my local hobbies shop, and the guy claims the Kimbrough spurs don't fit my car! I'm starting to think I need to find a new local store, he always disagrees with what I get from the boards.

Haha, yes Kimbroughs fit. I have two 128's and a 124 64 pitch. Looks like you need to find a new LHS that the people there know what they're talking about. Listen to us that drive the car every day :) Sorry for all your confusion.

Same mount pattern as every other touring car out there uses. Looks like it might be time for a new lhs.

Most LHS's are a joke anyhow. You ask them for a part and you get a look from them like your from outter space. or you have a big snot ball hanging from your nose:lol: the pro shops are the way to go or the shop at your track if they have one :D

don't have a track yet, in search of one nearby Newark, NJ or someplace in Northern NJ.

we have a bunch of guys from Jersey that travel to Willis Hobbies on Long Island.. They say it only takes them about a half and hour to get there... Willis Hobbies
