Default New Oval Class for 2012

Hi, Our Local track is planning a new Nascar oval class starting with Spring
weekly races. Rules are as follows in an effort to keep cost down and attract our younger kids into the sport. Rules are:
1- Any 1/10 scale 200 MM pan car chassis
2- 15T Modified brushed motor any brand
3- Duratrax Intelli speed 12T Modified ESC with reverse lock out
and zero timing.
4- NIMH Six-pack 5000 MAH any brand
5- Foam tires by BSR or Jaco any compound.
6- NASCAR body by Protoform painted to resemble a current
Sprint Cup or Nationwiade series champ

In adding up the price of everything needed for a competitive class it
is very cheap when comparing to a similar Brushless/Lipo car.

After the announcement, we have received input that 26 cars are being
built just for this class. These are older guys that race in the modified B/L class that are building cars for their sons and grandsons, even for
some Grandaughters. I completed a CRC Genx-10LE for my grandson
to race.(12 years old) and have attached photos of the car and chassis.
If anyone has some suggestions to improve the rules please let me know. Regards
Norman2

Small tip, get rid of those batt plugs and replace with deans or trx connectors

Try posting in the oval section. You are likely to get more responses. Good luck with the class.

You'll need to make some kind of rule about battery position or you will immeadiately be swamped with true oval chassis being adapted to the class.
Or you need a weight bias rule.

Also would recommend trying to use a Spec tire. Both BSR and Jaco have Spec foams, will save a lot of money.

Hi, Thanks didn,t think about that. Have to figure out some way to keep away from weight bias rules. Any suggestions? WE can change the rules
to spec tire. Escellent idea. Thanks

PS. We actually run the same class with 13.5T B/L and open ESC and offset cars don't show any
advantage over centered chassis. The CRC GenX-10LE is just as competitive as the CRC-Battle Axe
which is a dedicated oval chassis. Maybe you are correct and it will show up with the Brushed motors.
Again thanks for you suggestions, Regards

Six cells and a 15 wind is going to be insanely fast in a straight line - like faster than 10.5 1s fast. Even a stock motor (27 wind) is going to be too fast Brushed motors on oval need to be turned every run or two runs else they start eating themselves, which gets costly.

And if that's not enough, these cars are going to be very hard on tires, bodies, and parts because of the weight combined with the speed. . When we ran 21.5 2s no timing it was too fast for a lot of guys, although it was durable. Something else to consider - these cars are going to be impossible to practice with for the other classes unless you are running controlled practice.

I suggest you run a 1s class that mirrors the 1s Spec Truck series. That combination works and is fairly inexpensive because it's easy on parts, and there's no black magic in the tires.

Hi CraigMBA, Can you please let me know the rules for 1S Truck spec
class. From what you have pointed out it seems it may be better to
go that way. Going probably to 17.5 brushless with a not too costly ESC
will be cheaper in the long run vs. replacing a lot of brushed motors.
Will appreciate your suggestions as have to finalize the rules before
the end of January. Thanks

I agree that would be best, I would use BRL sportsman truck rules as a guideline

17.5 Sportsman Truck

5.1.2) The only battery allowed in the 17.5 Sportsman Truck class is the SMC 4000 Mahr, 25C single cell Lipo (PN SMC4025).
5.1.3) Any 17.5 turn, sensored, brushless motor approved by ROAR may be used in this class. A list of approved motors may be found at:
http://www.roarracing.org/?page_id=251
5.1.4) Electronic Speed Controls used in this class must be approved by ROAR for use in sportsman racing. When used in any practice or competition for this class these ESC‟s must be set to their sportsman or zero timing advance mode. A list of approved ESC‟s can be found at this link:
http://www.roarracing.com/?page_id=737
5.1.4.1) Wirelessly programmable Electronic Speed Controls are not allowed in this class
5.1.5) World GT Tires are the only tires allowed for use in the TOUR Sportsman Truck Class. World GT Tires are to meet the following specifications:
5.1.5.1) Tire compound to be Japanese R4 compound, 38 shore
5.1.5.2) Tire must have an identifier ring of purple colored foam visible around the circumference of the tire

You can of course alter these a bit to fit to the cars, I have removed the portion about bodies as these wouldn't apply to your class

Norman2.....

Looks like everyone covered everything you need for a fun class for you all.......good luck with it. We all run the Sportman Truck class (with there rules) with an expensive Hobbywing 1s ESC and a 1s lipo with spec tires. Racing is very equal and real fun!!!
By the way.......nice pic on the wall in the background of the red open wheel car.

If you've never run oval, that car that you have is going to be a fist full of dynamite (with similar results)!

We're trying to get oval started back up at my track, too, and we've loosely agreed to go with the TOUR/BRL truck rules. I've run my truck a few times, and for starter oval, it's lots of fun and really suprisingly fast.

For some rules sets that have proven rather robust and LOTS of information on everything oval, head over to the Oval section at Hobby Talk: Click Here
