T.O.P. PHOTON EX

This new car will be out early 2012, http://www.redrc.net/2011/10/top-rac...-ex-prototype/ Looks like it uses the same drivetrain and suspension parts as the old photon, and many of the parts are going to be interchangable, Have not seen any where you can preorder one yet, but I guess too early, I for one cannot wait to get one, the old car was amazing, so this one should be better, and hopefully will be competetive with the 2012 cars, as it is the lastest one, so top can get more knowledge by looking at the other 2012 cars, xray 2012, serpent s411 le, tamiya 417x, so this should have all the best from all three, lol, If only, only time will tell, now if top can get a release date and stick with it.

skypilot 12-25-2011 01:15 PM

its probably just me, but I'm pretty sure, TOP didn't wait until all the other "12s" were released before designing theirs.:D

TeamWTF 12-25-2011 01:31 PM

There is no preorder because its still not really known when it will be released.

On another note, the old car still is amazing.... The design is still fantastic... and it is still competitive.

Photon

Looks nice! Dual bell crank setup is nice! I don't like the Tamiya style suspension bridges compared to just using washers like on the Xray! Has Top released their own gear diff yet?

TeamWTF 12-25-2011 02:10 PM

They have the upro light weight gear diff... Suitable only for stock racing...

New year coming though.... :sneaky:

I like the new suspension mounts...I'm tired of bending screws with the washer method.

haywood 12-25-2011 03:09 PM

Suspension

Good point! Just can get spendy to have all the different variations.

TeamWTF 12-25-2011 03:15 PM

Hopefully they got a handle on the 'rear toe' issue many of us have had.

I mean, it handles just fine, but putting the car on a setup station just makes me squirm a little

I know they say this car is a huge improvement in modified, but from what I have read in 17.5 it wont be as essential to have this new car (Over the old car)

Can someone who has driven the new car let us know how it drives? How is it to set up? Will current setups transfer over without many changes?

Professor 12-25-2011 03:45 PM

new car

after seeing & having a little to do with the new car,i will be keeping my 2 photons that i currently have for the mean time.in saying that i dont run mod only 21.5/17.5 & i think the photon for these classes is an exceptional car which has suited me better than any other car ive owned, but each to their own as the new car will be of good quality & new features just as the photon was when it came out

Infinite 12th 12-25-2011 06:29 PM

Where is the rear gear diff?

Be nice not to have to buy seperate stuff ;)

jlfx car audio 12-25-2011 06:32 PM

Yea I don't like the suspention holders . I've mentioned the cost involved with getting all the optional mounts . That a part of the old photon I loved. It took $15 worth if washers and could set the car up any way u wanted.

zaraz 12-25-2011 06:49 PM

I have the 417x and find the suspension blocks to be really easy to use, I have all of them and it only cost 35 cnd, you don,t need to buy all of the blocks, most cars run -2 to -3.5 rear toe, so you will only need maybe two extra blocks, and you never know top might just put all the blocks in the package, like the s411 le

On my Tamiya they got really expensive to have all the options. I like how my current Xray is but yes I have bent screws. Screw and washers are cheap those bridges aren't!

Looks like one is $14.00 on Ebay

There is no set date yet, but they are shooting for early March.

hanulec 02-06-2012 07:55 AM

man - Larry's Photon EX was on fire this week at Snowbirds. I cannot not wait to get mine...

oh - in the main, Larry didn't have a transponder (and race mgmt missed it). He got peeled on lap 1, but rallied back to 6th stretching a lead on everyone in the pack. If he had one more lap I'd suspect that he might have been able to pass X for 5th..

almost march and still no new on this car, any preorders going on yet

Dragarcher 02-20-2012 07:26 PM

TOP USA doesn't take deposits for pre orders but we do take names and e-mail address's put them on a list and contact them when the cars are ready to ship. We send out all our orders USPS Prioity and most US orders arrive within 3 days.
The EX will not have a conversion kit but most aluminum and plastic parts are expected to be interchangeable with current Photon.

Photon

My concern with coming back to the Photon is the brittle parts like the knuckles and other plastics. My fellow racer breaks knuckles left and right! When I had the original Photon it was that damn steering bell crank that would break all the time! Can anyone comment on these items concerning the new kit? Thanks

Skitee 03-01-2012 01:34 PM

Well the new car doesn't have a bell crank steering setup like the old car so scratch that from your list of concerns :)

Going by the bits of info around the compatability of suspension parts between the old and new car, I would say keep the knuckles on your list and stock up or stop hitting stuff :sneaky:

1shnot 03-01-2012 01:48 PM

so will EX have newer gear diff? or upro?

A new TOP racing gear diff is being released soon, I don't know if the EX will have a ball diff or gear diff in the kit. Maybe someone from TOP can confirm ?

nnick 03-01-2012 02:21 PM

Looking at the prototype pics it seems to have new gear diff

Now that is funny...
Dont worry Larry...you'll be getting a full RED version.

Gotta say I'm digging those arm mounts....all types of Swagness.

The biggest question here...will there be a Fairtrace stealth edition....

L.Fairtrace 03-01-2012 07:09 PM

Body

I would like a Stealth version Please.

Thats the 'old' upro diff. A new stronger one is being developed.

It's not mine, but it looks a lot like the finished Photon Ex if you ask me.
