Hi guys

I simply want to know how important are they and do they really make a noticeable differance ?

We run 27t stock where i am and we are all looking for that little extra pace over the competition becasue its so close. Or is there something else you would reccomend ?

It's absolutely necessary for top performance, less arcing and less brush and commutator wear. That's one of the first things you should do to any motor.

You dont need to spend $$ on an alignment tool, just take an old set of brushes and file, or dremel the face flat. Stick them in the motor (without the shunt soldered on for easy removal) and run the motor for about 15-20sec. When you take the brush out you will see a wear line from where the comm is touching the brush face, if its not in the center, you will need to move the hood till it wears in the center. Sometimes this means making the holes in the brush hood a little bigger with an exact knife to get the adjustment you need.

The various alignment tools are useless.

The only one worth having in your box is a solid alignment bar. Just remember if you use the brush method (it is the best way) for hood alignment. On a properly aligned hood you will in most cases will not be able to push the bar all the way through. Usually the alignment bar is good for a starting point, fixing warped hoods and removing burrs.

The www.team-paradigm.com is one of the best to get.

The only ones that i would reccomend is the Paradigm and Niftech ones, both are very precise, and allign the hoods with no problem. Around 20-25 buck, which is a small price to pay for a faster, more efficent motor

I just got a KOSE tool, im not sure if it comes with instructions so would the Big Jims instructions carr the same principal for my hood tool???

Also how often should you check the allignment and what makes them get out of allignment??

Hey Dave , hows it going..........I check mine with filed test brushes every few runs.......there usually slightly off by that point............heat and vibration are mostly to blame

The Kose tool is a good unit....


And yes, Jim's instructions will work fine for it (just don't tell him!)

And anyone who thinks you don't need to use a alignment tool.....well I will be nice. Ask any top motor guy.....Reedy, Dieter, Troy at Fantom, etc.....and you will hear the same thing.....its a MUST. You can't do it with your fingers......
