We did that for awhile out here...it was cool for a bit. But the open style needed longer blocks of time for qualifying so when we started running late that was cut down...eventually it was cut down to the point that everyone just ran the whole session so it ended up like normal qualifying. Then we went back to normal qualifying.

I would also think that this method might be iffy for keeping cars in one piece, in order to TQ in normal qualifying you need to finish, hero laps can be dangerous.

It's funny, I remember a picture from RC Car Action magazine from like 10 years ago where all of the models at this car expo were racing each other at the R/C demo, they were all tiny asian girls and some big tall dude from the magazine was towering over them, and the rest of the magazine crew put funny captions of pickup lines up for him

Here's something that could be fun: instead of qualifying with full qualifying races, you have open qualifying where each class gets a certain amount of time (say, half an hour) to run laps on the clock F1 style, taking the fastest single laps or an average of your fastest three, five, or ten laps. I've put on a lot of races with "ODD" style qualifying...

4 lap single car
1 minute "heat race"
30 minute OPEN TRACK / Fast Lap

It's so fun to do things Different sometimes.

It's amazing how fast a 30 minute Qualifying Session goes when you try to make a few laps, then make a change or two, and look for a faster lap...

You run out of time SO fast.

In the words of a very good factory racer, the reason kids are so fast is they don't know they're under pressure.

What pressure...lol

These are toy cars...

Their having fun

If anything their just not under the pressure of having to work and be responsible hence less on their minds

It always seemed to me that this "pressure" was just excess competition from other drivers onto other drivers IMHO

The notion that one can loose or win doesn't remind me so much of pressure as does it opportunity

So, when you find yourself in the lead of a race with the field bearing down on you... the feeling of opportunity causes your heart rate and blood pressure are unaffected? Shit I should try that. My first big race I could barely keep from falling off the stool I was standing on.

If I were ever to lead a big race.
I'd have a big o'l smile on my face, knowing I had the speed to be there
