tamiya m06 / ta04s questions
Hi Ppl,
Looking to get started but have a myriad of questions... originally posted in the newb forum but suggested would get more comments here!
I was hoping to get either a m06 or ta04s... i can get the ta04 kit for around $90, the m06 is around $120 - both with ESC, but the m06 comes with an alfa body. i'm an alfa nut.
anyhoo, need the bits to make it work...
i was thinking the FS gts3b controller with a 11.1v 1450mah lipo battery.
1) with the lipo installed - can you still charge the controller thru its recharge port?
2) is there any advantage to using lipo in the controller as opposed to 8x nimh 3000mah aa batteries... i realise the voltage is lower @ 9.6 vs 11.1 which is closer to alkaline - is this a problem? will the controller beep low battery warnings with nicd or nimh aa batteries vs alkaline?
3) battery for the tamiya car... what style is appropriate for the tamiya chassis? i was hoping for a longer run time, but it has to fit... any issue with moving to a 7.4v lipo as well? tamiya spec is 7.2v IIRC... i was thinking something around 3000mah like so:
ebay ref: 330557958884
or the Turnigy nano-tech 3300mah 2S 25~50C Lipo Pack...
or could it fit something like this? (5000mah)
ebay ref: 220870481531
4) the ta04s kit also comes sans motor... which is the best cost effective 540 type motor i could get? just get any old silver can 540J and be done with it? or should i get a brushless from hobbyking? if so, which? i also assume i would need a pinion gear? what is suitable for the tamiya? a 32 pitch? or 48 pitch? appropriate number of gears of on road?
5) bodies... will most 1/10 tamiya bodies fit the ta04 chassis? i will probably eventually want to stick and alfa on it when i'm done with bashing... the m06 guila would be nice.... or the 155 touring body:
ebay ref: 230675063045
(sorry can't post links yet!)
cheers!

one more thing...
the ta04-SS is the swb version, but is the 10mm less due merely to part #50942?? in other words if you substitute it with part #50868 will you then have the 'normal' wheelbase so you can fit normal 1/10 shells?
cheers!

no one can answer any of the questions??

Have had both kits along with many other Tamiya cars.
1. Stay away from the FlySky radios. Just my own opinion but I tried one and it turned out to be a pain in the butt.
2. The 04SS can be changed to a regular wheelbase. The rear arms are different. Keep in mind the 04 cars are discontinued and parts can be tricky to find.
Yes, the 04 is a regular 185-190mm width chassis so any 185-190mm body will work BUT...the SS changes that so only certain short wheelbase bodies will work. Good luck with that ! The M06 is a M chassis so only M chassis bodies will work. The Alfa Gullieta will not fit the 04SS.
Lipos will work with the M06. 3000mah will work but you must make sure the case has the rounded edges. Gens Ace packs or even Reedy Wolfpacks should work. Check out the M06 thread for more help.
