Default Official Max Speed Tech MS-01D Pro Build and Resource Thread

MST? What is that you may say. Well MST short for Max Speed Technologies a company that opened it doors in 2010. Shortly after opening Spice licensed their MS-01D for the Japanese market. Some of you may know it as the Spice SRD-01. I am honored to present you the MS-01D Pro Kit! Based off the MS-01D base model the Pro kit comes with Front One Way, Aluminum Shocks, Motor Mount & Bulkhead assembly, Servo Mounts, and Spur holder. As an added bonus it comes with Disc Brake Hex Hubs and Calipers along with CS pulleys to achieve 1.54, 1.67, and 1.82 ratios. For my first Hop Up parts I got Solid Rear Axle, Aluminum Steering Rack with added angle, Hard Compound tires.

Opening the box it reminded me of all the high end brands. The packaging is top notch. The manual is in both English and Chinese, and the pictures are clear and easy to understand. Plastic quality is nice and OEM grade, I don't know if they offer graphite option. The build took me 6 hours. I would like to eventually upgrade to the CF main chassis, along with the aluminum bulkheads. The MSRP is $359.

MS01D OEM wheels 3mm offset.

MST Hard compound tires 3 degree camber

MST Medium compound tires 3 degree camber

The Build!

It start with Bag A which includes all screws, but bag letters order does not stay in alphabetical order.

Bag J includes bulkheads

MS01D Pro stock bulkheads.

Bag P is rear belt tensioner pulley parts.

Bag Q includes spur gear and belts.

Spur gear mounted.

Bag B includes bumper, shock oil, and battery strap O-Rings.

Bag E includes stock pulleys.

Counter Steer pulleys and front belt added bonus!

Bag D includes Front One Way assembly.

MST Hop Up part Solid Rear Axle 7075 Aluminum.

MST Hop Up part Aluminum Steering Rack with more angle.

Bag M includes CF top braces.

Ball H includes ball end pieces.

Bag G includes suspension arms.

Bag F includes shock parts.

Shock fully assembled with factory oil (30wt).

Bag K includes shock towers and standard plastic motor mount bulkheads.

Bag L includes turn buckles.

Bag I includes Disc Brake Hex Hubs and axle hubs four steering knuckles are used.

60 degree steering angle!

Bag C includes bumper parts and body posts.

Aluminum Servo Mount.

Counter Steer Baby!

Bag N includes the Battery Tray.

Completed Chassis!

Steering Angles!!!

Added feature! Real looking disc brake calipers along with disc brake hex hubs.

Added feature! Factory Counter Steer pulleys. 13T/18T - 54% CS.

The Build was really fun, and educational! The suspension arms do not use a conventional suspension arm with axle. This design is double A-Arm design pivoting on ball end collars. I hope I explained that correctly. LOL Thanks for looking!

Default Cool

Looks like a beautiful kit. How does it compare performance wise to your other chassis?

The droop screws are located on the upper A-Arms.

MST MS-01D Pro Kit Full Review

Kit Impression
The Kit came very well packaged, accompanied by an assembly manual in English and Chinese. All the parts bags were nicely labeled and there were no issues with missing parts. The pictures in the manual are very clear, and the screws that are pictured are exactly to scale. There is a significant amount of aluminum parts, along with carbon fiber top braces. The wheels that came with the kit are 3mm offset, and resemble a JDM style wheel while still having a unique look. It comes with solid urethane tires. I was fortunate to get two different sets Red Dot and Silver Dot. The Silver Dot seemed to be the harder compound out of the two so I will start my testing on them. The suspension is a double A-Arm design with the use of ball end collars rather than an axle to pivot on. I like this design a lot! The Front One Way that come standard with the kit, and the optional counter steer kit is just another added bonus. Not to mention Adjustable blue turn buckles. Those are some of the stock equipment on the MS-01D Pro. I also got with my kit a Hop Up Steering rack adding more steering angle, and Solid Rear Axle made of 7075 Aluminum. The shocks look similar to a TRF style design, but they come pre-assembled minus the shock oil. It made finishing the build a relatively easy process. To say I am impressed is an understatement, I am Amazed with the MST product!

Overall Chassis Build Process (4 out of 5 Stars)
The build took a little under 7 hours, approximately 6.9 hours. The bulk of the build took about 5 hours. Adding the electronics took a little fine tuning and property management. The MS-01D has a really narrow chassis, and unlike under mid front drift chassis. It's about the same width the length of the chassis very similar to the DRB. What’s also similar to the DRB is the steering rack, but MST uses their own unique design. That's one thing that catches your attention when you are building this car... The Unique design, layout, and overall look. The manual was easy to follow, but if you never built a kit before take your time.

Overall Quality of Materials and Parts (4 out of 5 Stars)
The plastic quality is nice. The molding is good quality. The plastic lack graphite mixture like some of the higher end Yokomo parts, but the quality is still better then most. I never got the feeling the kit was before high end quality. The aluminum is the very nice as well. All the parts exactly how it should. the thread pitch was nice, and I ran in zero issues assembling the aluminum parts. The Carbon Fiber top braces are a work of Art. The quality of the parts are equal to that of the VDF and/or DRB, the only items missing are aluminum bulkheads, and CF main chassis.

Overall Value (5 out of 5 stars)
The value is one of the highest selling points for the MS-01D Pro. With the MSRP being $359 USD you get the a lot of nice parts for a great value. If you compared it to the other top of the line mid front chassis out there the MST MS-01 D Pro is the best bang for your buck! You can always upgrade to the aluminum bulkheads and CF main chassis later. Without any hop ups its still a great performer!

Conclusion (4.5 out of 5 Stars)
In conclusion I am very excited to be driving the MS-01D Pro for the 2012 Drift Season. The overall unique kit design, and quality of materials and parts have got me hooked on the MST brand. The soon to be released new parts and the new design idea for a "true" front motor mount deigns is exiting! On my first test drive the chassis was so predictable, and light feeling under throttle and steering. I ran my test with 54% CS, and it felt like home. Without any tuning the car felt instantly alive with sick angle and controllable whip out. The center balance on this chassis is very nice. the drive train feel smooth and quiet. This kit is great for all skill levels. Novice will like the chassis for ease of control, and Experts will like the amount of aluminum along with the added CS kit that give you 50%, 60%, and 80% CS ratios. I strongly believe that the MS-01D Pro is a strong contender against the likes of the VDF, DRB, and R31.

Finishing the build. Bag O includes Servo horn parts.

Finished Chassis with Electronics.

Servo mounted with stock Servo Saver.

Low Friction belt tensioner.

Upgraded Steering Rack.

Solid Rear Axle 7075 Aluminum!

The CF Top braces are lazer cut!

After driving the car for the last couple weeks. I think it fairs right up against the best of the breed. Better then the VDF, and on par with the DRB. I have had no issues at all. The chassis is quiet, smooth, and lite feeling. Very predictable car. All my other cars have become shelf queens, and MS01D is my main!
