It's a hobby with sporting aspects. Do you hear the airplane guys asking the same question? Nah, they just fly, compete, and enjoy. Plus, who cares, really? Just drive, compete, and enjoy! I only wish we could get two Sundays a week!

It is by definitition:

1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
2. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation.
4.
1. Mockery; jest: He made sport of his own looks.
2. An object of mockery, jest, or play: treated our interests as sport.
3. A joking mood or attitude: She made the remark in sport.
5.
1. One known for the manner of one's acceptance of rules, especially of a game, or of a difficult situation: a poor sport.
2. Informal. One who accepts rules or difficult situations well.
3. Informal. A pleasant companion: was a real sport during the trip.
6. Informal.
1. A person who lives a jolly, extravagant life.
2. A gambler at sporting events.

That word physical keeps popping up, I just dont see this as a sport. I love RC, but I love my sprots also, and I just cant compare the two on levels of exertion. Yeah you need hand eye coordination, but so does the guy sorting packages at the UPS sortng stations, but that is not a sport either. (not to knock guys working at UPS, but it was the only thing I could come up with while I was typing.)

Look at #3 though. It says nothing about physical. As you can see, the word sport has more than several meanings. So saying R/C racing is a sport is true, it is just using a different definition. R/C racing uses #3 and a lot of other sports use #1 and #2.

Now lets stop beating the dead horse.

If F1 or NASCAR driver driving = sport, then WE (as a driver of RC car) should be = SPORT as well.....only different is, we race 5 minutes, they race 2 plus hour, but again, if we do a 2.4 (1/10th scale of a 24 hours) LeMan Endurance race.............then RC is a sport.
THAT IS TOTAL BS...

Have you ever driven a race?? Even in hire go karts 20 minutes and you're exhausted.

Formula 1 takes crazy fitness levels, the drivers constantly fight the car 100% of the time around a circuit, enduring huge temperatures and obscene lateral forces on the body, this huge energy drain is enough to make an average joe like ourselves faint.

And in formula one, if you make a mistake, it might be your last....

Ball sports to me are fun, but nowhere near as much of a sport as F1... I mean, you run for a bit, then rest...make a mistake? whoopdeedoo!! The other team gets a small advantage, no real harm done!

R/C to me is both a hobby and a sport...a casual bash is great fun....Hobby...When 2 or more cars get together to compete....Sport...

In auto racing you have no breaks, its 110% for anywhere from 1 all the way to 24 hours (depending on the racing of course), stuffed in a 120 to 200+ degree enviornment where the slightest lapse in concentration could end your very life.

As Ernest Hemingway said: "The only real sports are bull fighting, mountian climbing and auto racing, the rest are just games."

As for RC, on the higher levels its definatly a sport. Wrenching on your car until all hours of the night, pushing to the very limits (and beyond sometimes) of the rules, tweaking and doing anything you can to squeeze that last .0005s per lap out of it, sometimes watching days of work disapear in a second, and at the highest levels your very lively hood at stake (career drivers, if you bomb a bunch of big races your outta a job).

No, you don't have to be buff and able to run 6 minute miles, but if you look at the mental states of alot of sports players and rc drivers I bet you would find they're more alike than not. Some things are more physical than mental, some are more mental than physical, but its the attitude that defines it for me.

WELL said.

I still think we need a poll

If Baseball can be called a sport than so can RC Racing.... How many baseball players actually get to run? The only person exerting hiself is the pitcher.... I've seen many pro baseball players who were overweight pigs....

every time the ball is in play, all players are moving, be it running to catch the ball, running to cover the bag...

that is a poor argument

the overweight pig issue: I have this friend who goes about 6'1" -280.. he is definately not a trim boy... but he can WHOOOP me on a Mountian Bike... and NO.. not on the downhills... (Me being 5'10"- 185.. in much better shape..)

Buddy, you totally misunderstanding my point.......I am 100% agree F1 racing, Nascar and others form of car racing is a SPORT....I agree, and so I think RC is also a sport.

Just find out how many "G" force that the F1 driver have to absorb, that is already more challenging then any kind of sport like BASKETBALL or something....

I just just teasing when ppl think F1 driver, only the CAR does the work, not the driver, so ppl said Auto Racing is NOT a sport is a joke.....may be my english is so bad that no one can understand what I really mean.
