Changing HSP gearing.

Hello, got an HSP on road car and need to change the gearing because the car is getting too hot too quick.
Pretty sure the gearing is the problem.
What cogs can be fitted to an HSP car?
The ones in the parts catalouge are not that different.
Idealy need a bigger motor cog and a smaller diff cog?

Hey mate. Your probably right, motor heat is usually gearing. But the right gearing depends on alot of factors. Where are you running? A track or parking lot or something? How big is the area? What motor is in the car? Is it brushless or brushed and if you know how many windings?

The gears in question, the big one is called a spur gear, the little one is the pinion. Depending on your car, you may need an adapter to change the spur gear, so it's easier just to change the pinion. Most rtr cars will use 48pitch gears, so make sure you get a 48p pinion.

Determining the gear ratio you have now works by dividing the spur by the pinion, then multiplying that by the cars internal ratio. So spur/pinion x internal ratio. So to help we need those numbers. They should be in your manual.

HSP use 0.6 mod spur and pinions, goto your LSH and they should be able check to make sure they sell you the right pitch gear and to hook you up with a smaller pinion. (Pinion (smaller) is on the motor as opposed to the spur (larger) which is on the diff or transmission)

Now, there are other factors which cause motors to heat up and some motors are just more prone to this happening than others. Most cheaper motors are just really prone to running hot and this is not really a problem for them.

Also, what voltage are you running it at? More than 2S 7.2v and it will run hot as these motors are not designed to run 3S or more.

Will update this thread with the info as soon as I find the manual / parts booklet.
Thanks for the info

Ok, sorry for the late reply, decided I needed some time away from the cars, have spent a lot of money on them and had nothing but trouble.

Will have a good look for the ratios and that, thanks :)

Am running 5000mah 2's
60A 5.5t EZRun brushless set up.

Will take a quick pic to give rough idea of the gearing.
