Default Lipo about to blow!

Just curious if any of you have ever seen this happen before? I have been in and out of this hobby for 15 years and havent had my cars out for over a year so I figured I would dust them off today.
I purchased 5 lipo packs of different sizes and brands but two of the same in this picture about 2 1/2 years ago. I store everything indoors so nothing gets warmer than 80deg other than when they are used to play or race. I use them all the same and charge them all the same but for whatever reason this one has doubled in size!

Awww! Man! I'd get that thing out the house/garage and away from anyting flamable! I heard soaking it in salt water will neutralize it, then take it to your local electronics recycling center for proper disposal!

Soaking in salted water is the solution BUT you need to discharge it as much as possible first, around the 3v per pack and in a lipo bag preferably or something safe (box) if you do not have one and away from anything you cherish! wife, dog and racing car of course

What a waste and is good didnít explode. Donít get me wrong I like the LIPO batteries, but I donít recall any issues in 25yrs+ with my nimh.

You must not have been paying attention in your 25+ years, or you must have just bashed and never raced.

I've seen that happen a few times, even to a few that had been sitting idle, NOT plugged into anything.

BTW, LiPos don't explode, in fact, they aren't supposed to light on fire at all as they should have a flame retardent inside the casings. The ones I have seen fail have just turned into smoke bombs, but not flame up.

LOL @ NiMHs, those things are like hand grenades when unstable! I witnessed a pack explode at the onroad track and 2 cells stuck into a sheetrock wall over 20 feet away!

You're right Ty, I've been near NiMhs 3 times now when they've exploded and hand grenades is about right! (IP every time.)

It is VERY rare for a LiPo to catch fire, and almost only when seriously abused. They can go bad and expand over time though as said. There is no need to panic about it, but the recommendation is right. Discharge in a LiPo sack, then salt water to fully discharge, then dispose of safely.

Yep some 4200 SHO were banned in scandinavian countries because of exploding packs.

i had an orion pack that was 4 years old....never balanced in all those years, never had a problem. then a buddy talked to me about the importance of balancing a lipo,sp we did. 2 days later the pack swelled so bad i barely got it out of the slash. when i did, it continued to swell. i dropped it on the bench when it blew up , ignited and burned a super hot flame. hot enough to melt the l/r wheel and tire as well as the workbench.

You shouldn't EVER stab a LiPo or any other kind of battery, that's just asking for it.
