The best performing rally car was a TC3 with the rally conversion kit. I saw Tony Phalen run his many years back at SoCal on the offroad track with no problems on the doubles and triples. If you can find an old TC3 for cheap and maybe the rally conversion kit from somewhere online, maybe ebay, that would be a great inexpensive setup.

xD this is a TC4 ... on drifts and Offroad Tires with a slight suspension mod to get more travel.

would a tt-01d with some modification work? i found one really cheap for sale and i can't afford to get a tc3 or df-03ra. i would rather get a cheap rc and mod it out for rally than get an extremely expensive rally rc car or a car with rally conversion kit. i will need to know by tomorrow about lunch time because i found a great rc and thats when the listing ends

Personally, I really dislike the tt-01. People that I know who have them strip lots of gears and end up spending a lot of money on upgrades.

If you can't afford a DF03RA I think you better let us know what your budget is or readjust your hopes.

They come for around 200$ these days if you know where to look.

Or a TT01 rally for a smidge over 100$.

Buying the cheapest s/h car you find can be false economy. Parts are dearer if bought individually.

Rcmart have the Mitsi lancer (DF01 based chassis) on special right now for 99$.

Avoid a tt-01 for this I would say. A xxx-s would be great because they are durable and the sealed-drivetrain is a plus, remember their 4wd buggy is closely based on the same design (close not exact). And yes the rally conversion for the Tc3 was a good option.

But would it work? I could just get aluminum gears

More headache and money than it will be worth. Suspension is not too versatile. Put a post in the WTB for a Tc3, bound to find something sooner or later. The tt-01 is for on road and silvercan racing, beyond that your going to dump money into something that only has so much potential. IMHO.

EDIT:

That totally your choice but i only say that Tamiya is the best. This scheme really lights up the nitro auto. Tamiya's is a perfect kit. Tamiya got it right on the configuration then. I'll stick with that.It also saves me from having to assemble bunch of extra stuff.
