I F M A R starts or heads up

"I would say IFMAR typically but several of the places I've been have been really bad about having an "IFMAR" mentality and letting the faster car through"
That seems to be the thing with IFMAR that most people don't get it that it is against the clock not each other. I know when I first started it was hard mentally to just let other by but now that I have been doing it awhile it really makes sense.
We do heads up starts at our track for club races but IFMAR for big races and some of the people that just do the club races mainly don't get it right away. We have been using the transponders during club races to get the newer people used to it and how it works for big races.

This is just a reminder that the question was for large races only ie regionals , champs, worlds, nats,or any other big race your track my be hoasting . Not club racing that should always be heads up qualifing.

I think that ifmar for qualifying is a great idea. But I don't like the heads up start on the main, especially if there is a 10 car main on a small track. More than often there is always a big pile up at the first corner. After the race I'm always left with the feelings that qualifying means nothing when the start ends up like that only because everybody is fight for that first corner. If we are going to do heads up start we should have the cars in single file line and separate them far enough so that there is less chance of being taken out. Just my thought.

Vue,
I agree w/ you, but single file seems a bit much, although I could see a staggered grid.

I disagree, the people being lapped should not hold their line. That's just asking to be taken out specially if you have to slow down and follow that car for serveral laps. I don't mean pull over either. If the guy is fast enough to put a lap down on you then giving a little opening for the inside line is enough.
I totally disagree on heads up. Qualifying is about who has the best line and who's most consistant. Qualifying shouldn't be who has the most luck passing back markers. If you make qualifying similar to mains, it just makes back markers more reluctant to give you room to pass. The racing should be done in the mains.
Do they have heads up in real race car quals? (not sure since I don't watch a lot of racing)

People do not always just move over in real racing either. I agree they should give you some room on an inside line so not to lose any ground they have made. When I was involved in racing real cars we had one qualifier and heat races then a trophy dash then the main. The qualifying was to see which heat you were in then the winners and the tope 3 or 4 from the heats ran a trophy dash then the main. The heats set us up for the main and then in some cases they inverted the top 3, 6 or 10 depending on how many cars there were. Your right about qualifying being about the best line around the track........Is it that bad to have racing for a position to have some fun with each other all day long??
I agree to disagree no harm intended by any means, just stating opinions as well.
