Default 3300 getting really really hot on Turbo 35gfx

My profile is basically this...

Turbo 35GFx
6amp charge
.04 cutoff....
2 peaks.

My 3300 SMC packs are getting really really hot. hot enough to not want to touch them.

They do get really hot when charging. Check out SMC's website I think they have a temperature guide on there. A nicely charged pack is almost to hot to hold onto for very long.

I have never had a problem with batteries getting to hot, Try only 1 peak instead of 2. When you use 2 then it charges to full and then wanted to overcharge it on its second charge. Just try one peak and see how it is.

Also-if your going to repeak-use a much lower delta peak value-like -0.01 on repeak.

I also like to set repeak for 15 minutes after first-that way for club racing-if I peak too early-then I get a repeak. If I am close to start of race-no need for repeak.

At a big race-by all means-repeak that puppy and get it 140 and race!!!

jlou671 - Your cut off level (.04v) is too high. Oscar Jansen from Team Orion told me never to get a battery hotter than 145deg while charging. Any hotter and you start cooking off chemicals and loosing performance. If you have a battery sponsor and you are at the Nats who cares but if you buy your packs I recommend the following settings.

Peak 1:

5.5 amp charge
.03 cutoff

Peak 2:

5 amp charge
.02 Cutoff

When you re-peak you want the unit to turn off as soon as there is a perceivable voltage drop. Any more and you will over heat your cells.

The above settings are good for Stock and Mod racing.

I set the re-peak for 1 minute after the peak. You must re-peak...every time before you run. We have done a lot of testing on this (on track and during pack cycling). Re-peaking will give you more run time, voltage and a lower IR.

If the shrink isn't melting and breaking then it's probably not too hot. A temp gun would go a long ways to make sure you are within the limits. I think SMC recommends a .05 drop before peaking.

Good advice.

I always heard 125 degrees is a good temp for your typical club race. Guess I need to steal my wifes meat thermometer for a while.

I didn't realize I could change the repeak settings...Guess I should have read that manual...

There is no advantage to getting GP3300's that hot. It may have worked for Panasonics and Sanyo 3000 but not GP's. In testing our team has seen no advantage to setting the cut off higher than .03v.

All of our testing is done in conjunction with Reedy and Orion which are the companies that sponsor our drivers.

You have to take the ambient temp into consideration when setting your cutoff..... Adrian runs in Florida and .03 prob works great there but up here in Wisconsin I need .05 to .06 to get the batt temp I want... 120-140. I feel pack temp is the most important value. I only repeak if my pack temp drops too low before my race. But every one has there own ideas.... heck the matchers cant even agree

Your right...I didn't think about ambient temps. We havent raced in cool weather in quite a while...lol!

I cold winter raceday here is 65deg F!

That is true-the one time I ran outdoors this year-I had to cut my delta peak WAY down-but when the sun went down-back up to 0.05 I went. I thought my first two packs were going to melt the chassis and fall out of the bottom of my truck.....

Here my setup:

5 amp
.06 cut off
1 peak

The battery is quite hot, but still normal.
