Default Belt and pulley questions

The JRXs is my first belt drive car and I have a few questions related to the belts.

First, the belt tension (both front and rear) does not seem constant. Instead, as the pulleys turn, the belts get tighter and a bit looser. Is this normal?

Second, related to the varying belt tension, I have found that nasty, sticky black dirt seems to accumulate in the spaces between the teeth on the belt pulleys. The more that builds up, the more the belt tension seems to vary. I have tried both digging this dirt out with a very small blade screw driver and spraying it out with Buggy Blast. Buggy Blast seemed to work best, but I'm afraid that using this spray will also dissolve the grease in the diff, so I am reluctant to use it. What is the best way to clean these pulleys?

Do the belts themselves need any cleaning or maintenance?

TIA,
Ira

I would just remove the belts and clean them with WD-40 and use motor spray and a toothbrush to get the pulleys clean. Thats how I clean my nitro, I don't have that problem with my JRXS though, only ran it indoors.

Yes the belts do "pull" tighter when you move the pulleys. This is normal. As for the dirt, I use an old tooth brush along with a 1 1/2 inch wide paint brush to dust off the car between rounds. The tooth brush works well for those pulleys and also other tight areas. If I can keep the dirt from building up in the teeth of the pulley then cleaning it isn't really an issue. I went to a race 2 years ago and Jimmy Babcock plus Travis Amezcua were there. They both had these regular looking paint brushes and were constantly dusting off their buggy's. If I had the choice of cleaning methods, I would choose to have some compressed air at the track. Saves all of the brush strokes!

Hi Bill
Well, finished building me JRX-S, It went together real nice except for one of the locating pins in the front wishbone retainer, the head broke on me even though I tapped out every hole
Just a couple of Q's
1) what is the spare front wish bone retainer for?
2) The car came up aroung 80 grams light. not to sure where to place the weigts?
3) Any body know where I can get one of those C l-Can -Fan thing's

I'm sure more people have the problem but have not noticed it. There cars arnt quite right and they can't figure it out. I would suggest everyone check there 4dg front spindle carriers to make sure they are the same regardless of what the stamp said..............................................

Answer to Q 1
you get a 0degree & 1 degree in the kit for the front toe-in angle for hinge pins
1degree(kit)more agreesive seering then the 0degree one

this is diffrent then toe-in on wheels malc
this is to do with hinge angles & wishbones

Malc,

Guess that you already saw the answer to Question 1...he, he...

Mine was about 80 grams light too. Maybe a bit less with your double fan unit. I have my weights low (probably looked at Matt Francis' car); but, Josh Numan had his up on the upper decks. Believe Josh still has 2 or 3 of our 25 cent coins (US quarters) epoxied in place to act as the weight. Our quarters should be a bit heavier than your 10 pence coins...Must be the Exchange Rate or something. Or would you like me to send some quarters?

How about an upper deck with the 30mm fan(s)?

Cheers!

Bill
