There are a lot of activities that have national points systems. No reason it can't be done.

If you want to know why nothing has come of it, this statement right here is your answer. Youre giving up before you even start. I think a national points ranking system would be a wonderful idea. I think that with a little effort a program could be wrought to keep a regular points database and it could be readily maintained and give racers something to shoot for. I think that maybe using three or four tracks as a test case would be a good starting point (similar to what Mr Hohwart suggests a few posts ago) and then maybe once the viability of such a system is established, then it could be expanded to a more regional and national footprint

I have always thought that this would be a great idea, MX, BMX, and I'm sure a whole slew of other organizations use some sort of national points system. Back in the day when I raced BMX, I looked forward to getting my monthly magazine that had points listings in it. You could see how you ranked in the state or nation.

I think if we did something like SCCA or Skip Barber that might be a workable way of doing things

I don't race onroad but I sometimes skim the section and I found this thread interesting so here goes.

RC_Dan you just mentioned something else that would be needed for this to happen. PROMOTION. A point series doesn't even get off of the ground if nobody even knows about it.

There would have to be some incentive for manufacturers to support/sponsor this. Also, there would need to be incentive for racers to drop the coin on a ROAR membership.

Promotion comes into play here.

One thing I have noticed is that the mags don't cover racing like they used to. Also, you don't see internet sites giving detailed accounts of the races themselves.

I really think if we got the hobby-related media outlets to focus a bit more on the racing end of it that would go a long way to helping this function.

What I think also would be helpful is to find a track or two in each region who would want to be part of a test case once a basic points structure can be wrought.

The manufacturers have no need to sponsor this. The whole reason for the effort is that a points system would BE the incentive to join. This should be focused on creating more excitement for the average or grassroots racer. The way things are today, where it is harder on the wallet to travel to races, this could make the local track an exciting place to be. It also makes ROAR more attractive to tracks, since they now have something to offer that only ROAR has available.

ROAR needs to increase participation from the racer who may never attend a national race.
