Default Japan 1/12th Nationals

Short news from the Japan Nationals 1/12th, held at Yatabe Arena, Tokio.

Today (Sunday already here...) 2nd qualification, tomorrow (Monday) finals. 150 drivers attending, all driving open modified class.

At the moment it is Masami leading Hara, 3rd Kimura (Yokomo factory driver). Hara has a hard job to follow Masami, as this is Yokomo land (Yatabe Arena is Yokomo/Masami test track). Main problem is traction, the Yok drivers all have more traction in the infield. Knowing Hara he never gives up, and sure is there is quit a lot of improvements possible.

In regards to cars, Yokomo and Associated are used by the majority of drivers. No further news here. Tires used is the Yokomo L rubber, track surface is asphalt. Additive FX2 in combination with Suntan Lotion.

Batteries used by 90% of driver are the Sanyo 3600, simply as they offer great capacity and voltage. Runtime is no real issue for most, more how to get the power on the track.

Motors uses from 8 to 10 turns. Hara uses a V2 modified version 8 double, pretty much standard (only thinner wire is used compared to production) on a ration of 39mm/rev. Brushes the new V2 edge sprint, with softest springs possible. Highest measured topspeed yesterday 69km/h, which is for a 1/12th car stunning.

More updates later today.

Interesting to see top-level drivers using the Sanyo cells, that hasn't happened much at all here in the States.

Thanks Oscar!

Yeah, suntan lotion is a common thing with pan cars on asphalt. Weird huh?

Interesting. Not that we ever see pan cars here in Southern Cali ever.

When I raced 1/8 and 1/12 scale 20 years ago, suntan lotion was a very common tire additive.

The suntan lotion is an old school trick. Back before Trinity had their first 1/12th scale car, there's a shot of Joel Johnson wrenching on a 12L with suntan lotion on the tires in one of the old AE Videos (91 or 92 I think). For those wanting the ultimate advantage they'd inject the lotion into the foam with a needle and it would continue to "re-coat" the tire through the whole race as the centrifical force expelled the goo outward.

Wouldnt that be horrible for the balance of the tire?..

Are these Ruber tires for 1/12th? Could anyone post a picture? The pink TRC's that I use at our track is only good for about 4 packs. Could someone be kind enough to post a picture of these tires?
Thanks a Mil!!! Lem

Qualification just finished, its Masami who is on the pole, followed by Hara. Kimura still in 3rd.

Differences are very big, there are 2 full 15 seconds laps difference from number 10 in the A final to Masami. Hara and Masami are not far apart, their fastest laptimes differ .1, than a huge gap.

The suntan lotion has created quit an astonishment to some I read. Will explain a bit more how it is used here: First FX2 is soaked on the tires, for about 10 minutes. Than lots of suntan lotion, which is rubbed in for a few minutes. About 30 minutes before the start the tires are very carefully dried with a towel, to have them sticky dry before the run. I questioned here drivers why it gives more traction, but they say they do not really know. They are only sure that it gives more traction.

Yokomo L rubber is a kind of pink foam type tyre, but not exactly same. The grain is slightly different, as well the side bite a bit higher. Forward traction a fraction less.

Most popular body here is Parma Speed 8.

Atsushi is using the Hara Hot Bodies 1/12th conversion kit with Kawada parts. This is different to the car he used to win the Roar natts, as that car was based on the Associated.

Masami is testing and using here the new small KO Propo speedcontroller, this in preperation for the Worlds. Lets see what he will choose there.

Thats all for this evening here, its time to for sushi and Asahi. More tomorrow....

rubber tyre on 1/12,no way. I/12 only runs foam, Yokomo L rubber is also foam tyre. Just check the JMRCA site, after five rounds of quailfy, Masami TQ, Hara second, but Masami's time is 10second faster, only these two can run 35 laps. Sorry, Oscar, I should let you post the result.
