aligning brush hoods

do i still have to align the brush hoods even if there's a "dimple" on the endbell? i was looking at a couple of trinity endbells and theres a "notch" or "dimple" that seems to lock the brush hoods in place, therefore preventing misalignment

IMO you want the brushes aligned to the comm not to each other.
Use the same make brush to align the hood as you plan to run in the motor. All the little tweaks add up and DO make a difference.
The new motors seem to have a better alignment then the old but should still be checked.

Are you talking about the lug that fixes the timing on a stock motor?

That should help explain it a little bit with diagrams. One of the main keys to aligning the brush hoods is clamping the hoods tight to the brushes. The hoods on EPIC motors are slightly too big because the cheapo brushes that come on the brushes are made in Japan, versus race compound brushes we always use such as the 767 and 4499 are made in the US or to US specs. The difference is small, but its enough to make noticable power difference. Without risizing or clamping the hoods, the brushes are constantly shifting back and forth when you hit the throttle.
