Talking Part 2 of how to make the Cuda Quiet

OK now that we have figured out that there is 2 different R2 bevel gears..

next step is to shim the Dang bevel gear to get every last bit of play out of it

You will need a shim set that is 8X10mm and in sizes 0.1~0.3mm Kyosho makes a nice set........ have a look at the pic for the part #

Wink final step on how to make your cuda quiet

OK now that we have the gears and the shims ..it`s time to determin what size you will need.... ...

Well luckly I saved you a a bunch of time buy doing the simming on both gears to find out what works best... so here it is..
if you have the small riged 1st gen R2 gears then you will need two 8x10 0.2mm shims`
and if you have the newer Gen R2 bevel gears then you will only need one 8x10 0.2mm shim....

place the shim or shims on the gears ( best to replace front and rear as a set and if you have an extra diff gear and front one way diff gear it`s best to change them out with the new gears at the same time to get the best results and to have a quiet drive train...) also shiming of the diff and one way now ...you have to place all of the shims on one side to get the gear the far from the bevel gear...... and make sure that there is very minimal side to side play in the diff and front one way....
after you have done this.....your Cuda "Will" become quieter.. also you no longer have to mess around with sanding any of the gears...all you have to do is a light clean up of any flash left behind from the mold....

well have a look at the last pic for the details on were to place the shim on the bevel gears...

I hope you all will try this because I got sick of my japanese [email protected] fun of my car because I have one of the only a few barracudas at my home track and it`s very loud

OK I have a question about those shims, how the heck do you get them over the notches on the bevel gears or do they have enough play in them to make it simple?

You will need a set of needle nose plyers and give the bevel gear a slight pinch and slip the shim over the notches...it`s quite easy one you know how to to do it

Go easy on Rtype though, you get that guy fired up and he'll pull off another RROC type performance, he's fast enough already

4 Cuda's Tuesday night, didn't catch the other cats name, wonder if he's a board member
haha! El Rando, that's the name of the century! Thanks for all the help on Tuesday, I wouldnt have done as well as I did without your advise and tips.

There were 3 Barracudas in our pit alone, and I saw 2 others lurking around, I was really surprized to see that many, when I went there 2 weeks ago, there was 1 or 2 tops.

I was talking to the person that had just gotten his cuda and was running it for the first time in the BL class with you guys, and he's a board member here, just doesnt post much he said.

Hope to see you there next Tuesday, hopefully I will be better with a little more practice under my belt.

Thanks for the shimming lessons dave

My cuda wasn't really loud, but definately louder than others. I'll definately order one of the Kyosho shim kits and a set of new gears and give that a shot.

Thumbs up Hmmm interesting stuff Dave

I guess we don't have the new gears over here yet ?

Thanks for the tips, I must say however that the drivetrain on my cuda is pretty quiet since I did the following...

Forget the plastic bumps on the ends, I prefer to cut them off with a dab of ca in there place, the reason for this is when & if you take a big hit the shaft and the gears will want to shift around a bit, this keeps everything nicely tight & aligned. I also reccommend setting the end play by moving the aluminum blades for & aft on the carbon shaft, this is to keep the spur gear in perfect position.

With this simple mod my CUDA is pretty quiet, but it still has a distinctive shriek, I quite like that sound

The new hard graphite C-hub & Knuckle arm pieces can't arrive soon enough, outstanding !

As far as the for and aft movemnet of the shaft I found it best if you leave about a 0.5~1mm end play...in the shaft and if you have a PAL system 1~1.5mm end play...

I'm just trying to figure out how to adjust the end play. Been talking to Dave (RBF) in PM, so hopefully he can explain it to me. I'm much better with illustrations than words

Don't see how you can get much end play in the stock shaft, mine fits tightly in the bevel gears, so all play is in the gears/shaft holders and there isn't much there. hmm.....

trust me you`ll be surprised on how quiet a couple of 0.2mm shims can make when put in the right places on the barracuda...I have been working on this for over 2 weeks and finally figure out what works
