RUNNING A FRONT GEAR DIFF
 

I am gonna try out a gear diff up front for indoor carpet.

Has anyone tried this, and what are the effects.

For those that have not tried it and have their own theories, can you tell me your findings?

I have, i started with 90,000 wt traxxas and car was awesome lots of corner speed i needed to calm the car down the rear was loose i made a few changes to the car and it hooked up iam also going to try 120,000 ofna gear diff silicon to make it feel almost like a spool and smooth it out more i did notice it seems to have more rip of the corners than the spool and you are able to stay in the throttle longer than a spool.

have not tried it but i have read that some of the "factory" guys have tried it and it's much better on entry but much slower on exit..... They are up to 500,000 traxxas lube......... again from what i have read they are back to the spool......

Haven't broken anything on the front of the car since!!

Haven't noticed any difference to running the spool (Maybe bites a little harder on turn in rather than just washing out)

I love it and wont be going back to the spool for sure!

I have been running a 416 with Traxxas 500K in the diff. It acts much like a spool, but without the violence getting on and off the throttle. Much better on turn in, and mid corner.

Not sure about the corner exit thing, the car is better to me.

Anyone find something thicker than 500k or ofna diff lock?

Spool and ball diff, best of both worlds. 'Maybe' a little push from mid to exit but overall just smoother to me.

I actually have that, with the upro diff and 2 spiders its not enough, it might be with a spec.r though.

What about using front gear diff on asphalt?

I finally got around to trying this tonight on carpet, and I'm a believer! I'm matching my old fast laps, and the car is so much easier to drive. It doesn't do any of those weird spool things you don't realize are happening anymore because you've been driving one so long. Also, I find it much easier to make slight corrections if I take a bad line. I've corrected out of more taps tonight than probably the last year combined.

What oil did you use?

I'm not sure how thick it is, but it's more than the 500k I also bought.

Some other observations:

We have a lot of trouble at our track picking up crap out of the groove and having it get stuck to the tires. It's most common on the outside of the right front, although if you throw a new set on there, it'll coat all 4 within a few laps and require them to be cleaned with motor spray. Usually the problem mostly goes away after a few runs. With the gear diff up front, I didn't pick up anything at all, not even on a fresh set which is unheard of. The tires came off cleaner than I've ever seen.

I bested my fastest lap by .2, and was able to consistently stay within .3 of my fastest lap. I think this is mostly attributable to just getting more track time, but I'd already put down a decent number of laps on the current layout. I didn't do back-to-back testing with a spool last night because changing CVD's was more work than I was feeling interested in. :)

The motor was coming off hotter. I may have to adjust my gearing/ESC setup. I'm not quite sure why this is happening.

All in all, a very good option that I'll probably go to by default at a new track. I'm sure there's going to be times when a spool is still the better choice. But the amount of control I felt like I had over the car was something I've really missed.
