What Temperature For Soldering?

I just got a soldering iron with adjustable temperature. What should I use it at?

unless you're working with delicate circuits, crank it as high as it can go.

This is wrong.

If it's too high, you will oxidize the solder on the tip and the iron will fail to melt good solder joints, ie. crappy connections. Then you will need to spend time cleaning the tip to get good conductivity again.

500-700 degrees is ideal, depending on the type of solder you are using.

Yeah. You may have to sand it or something for the solder to stick well again. Esp. when you leave it on for a long time.

well I leave mine on from 7am til 6pm on race days. But when I'm not using it, I turn it all the way down.

60watts is good for heavy gauge wire

hahaha, um, how about at the nats, leaving it on for like 3 days straight, as in forgetting to turn it off at night. This was a Hakko and we left it turned on high for three days.

just keep the tip tinned and you should be fine at high temps..just wipe it off prior to use, then when it is going to sit, tin it.

alright, thanks for the help.

I usually stick with 675-725 deg. depending on what I'm soldering.
If I'm tinning wire- 675 deg.
If I'm soldering to a cell - 725 deg, to get the job done faster, therfore causing no damage to the cell.

I've been keeping mine at 835, when I'm not using it I turn it down. Then turn it back-up when I need it.

when soldering the batteries don't forget to scuff first teh ares to where you are gonna solder so that it will definitely get you a good joint.. temp 650 - 750 will do just make it as quick as possible, so that you don't burn up or heat the cells too much..

 :tire:
