Default the "Formula One" of R/C

Hi guys, I was just wondering, what is the fastest roadcourse class in r/c, on asphalt or on carpet. For asphalt, would it be modified touring cars, or pan cars, and for carpet which? How do their lap times usually compare?

Well the fastest roadcouse class period would be 1/8 scaled nitro if I'm not mistaken.

After all it is referred to as the "formula 1 of RC"!

Back in the 1/10 pan car days we turned lap times faster than 1/8 nitro cars on a regular basis. If I were to pick a Formula 1 of R/C, I'd have to go with 1/10 modified pan cars on asphalt. They were unbelievably quick.

I guess the power to weight ratio of the 1/10 pan cars would give them an advantage.

I still think the 1/8 scalers would be a better fit for the title of "F1 of R/C"

Especially since, unlike 1/10 pan cars, people actually still run 1/8 nitro!

People talk about 1/8 nitro being the "F1 of R/C" but I think that's more because of the money involved, and the innovations that often show up there before they show up in other classes. Pillow-ball suspension designs, for example, which have now made their way into the 1/10 scale arena.

But as far as driving ability and speed, I think Trips has it down. The problem with 1/10 pan car racing, and really the reason that it has died off, is because people (the majority, not everybody) want cars that they can sit down on the track for the first time and have them hook up reasonably well. Somebody with average driving skills can buy a XXX-S or a Nitro TC3 and look decently good on a high-bite track. I don't think you can say the same for pan cars.

The other factor is realism, to a degree. As [serious] racers a lot of us overlook it -- we just gravitate towards what is popular or what is challenging -- but a lot of people don't want to run GTP-style bodies, they want to run a 1/10 version of their Honda (or whatever). I think pan cars eventually paled in comparison to touring cars for those reasons, and once people saw the trend, new racing classes were formed, and the rest is history.

Some people still run pan car classes that are rather successful. For example, I know MarkA has a good one running at SoCal. It's still out there, it's just tougher to find...

Yeah, we still have a 1/10th Pan Class at SoCal that averages 15+ racers every Saturday.

As far as the fastest/highest tech class, the "F1 of RC", that would depend. In terms of cost and technology, it's definitly 1/8th scale OnRoad. Get on a smaller track where the gas car will bog down and/or not be able to get up on the pipe a lot and I think a 1/10th Mod. Pan Car would be faster overall.

Yes, 1/12th scale is really something when run correctly with six cells. The pace is really tremendous if it's measured in corners per second.

I m sure the 1/8 nitro are the fastest like what DS said.
If u are talking about electric then it depends on the track. Pro10 pan cars usually lap about 10% faster than mod 4wd sedans on a medium size track with flowing corners. Contrary to what many people believe the pan cars actually carry more speed than the 4wds through the corners. On very small and technical tracks the will lap times be comparable since the 4wd can accelerate earlier and harder. 1/12 and pro10 should havehave very similar times.
