Spec Mode Racing - Gearing & Timing?
 

Guys:

Touring car, 2S, 17.5T Brushless Novak Ballistic & Tekin RS Pro in spec mode.

Any ideas what the FDR should be?
What about timing on the endbell of the ballistic? If cranked to the max, then gearing?

Appreciate any info...never raced in spec mode...

I'm not runing a Novak but I would start with a 4.0FDR and zero timing. Then you can either tweak your gearing or timing a bit to fine tune.

With a duo 2 with max timing, 4.1 was about the most I could take. Any more killed it on the infield.

on a track with a shorter straight i had full timing on my ballistic, and ran 4.3 fdr

depends if you want to play with timing or not. I tried running 3.8fdr with no timing, and straight speed was better, but the lipo was really put to the test, i think im going to try a mix of both next.

I run 3.5 as my FDR when running 17.5 w/o boost or timing. Temp the can after 5 mins of track driving and adjust accordingly.

What do you guys is best? Using some mechanical timing with shorter gearing or no mechanical timing with taller gearing?

no one knows the size of your track, your driving style, temp of track, length of race, length of straightaway, plus the car, etc etc too many variables...

I started at 4.26 on my small track and it was nearly perfect.

4.0+ is good starting point. anywhere from 3.5-4.5fdr.

It mostly depends on the track layout and how tight it is or not.

Secondly: You need to be honest with yourself on how good your batteries are and how free your drive line is.

Third; Can you or your set up retain corner speed?

And lastly; How light your car is.

Temp of the motor is a good gauge of where you are but don't get caught up in what is too high or not (Unless you are running 220*F+)

If you are afraid to push your limits, you will never find them.


With my TB03 I have run clear down to 2.9 and as high as 3.7 in RCGT. My car weighs 1402g and the drive train is very free so I can get away with some low FDR numbers. I also ran 40C batteries back then and now will be running 65C. Yes it makes a difference, quite a big difference. I also was not afraid to run my motors around 200*F. The one and only 17.5 motor I have used is still running very strong and winning races in on & off road...... Fantom
