Default ESC for 540 Class

Hi guys, I recently got myself a HotBodies Cyclone from here, and I was wondering what would be a good motor+esc to run in a 540 class.

I also have a Johnson motor which I was told can be used in 540, but what ESC would be good to use with that? Either Ill go the ESC for that, or would it be better to go for a complete package?

I would suggest getting a good brushless system.

I don't believe I can get a brushless, since my club hasn't got another equivalency for it eg 25.5t
Im thinking of getting the Tamiya TEU-101 or 104 ESC for it, but what is the difference between the 2?
I want to start in the 540 class and get used to that before going any faster (i know t sounds a bit weird coming from a nitro driver, but I want to start slow with electrics )

I currently run in Tamiya TT-01 spec class that uses the Johnson motor. I use a Traxxas XL-5 ESC, which I got very cheap from a seller here on RCTECH, with no trouble. I don't know if this model is still available but there is a XL-10 ESC that is currently available which I assume will work just as well. The downside is there is no Lipo limiter built in so you have to pick up one.

Try a Tekin FX for about $80 or a Novak GTS for roughly the same $$$. Also, Associated is selling their QC3 for $75 direct from them. The QC3 is a top of the line brushed esc and the other two are their "sport" models, but more than adequate for a Johnson 540.

Hmm, might be a bit late for this, but since I race 1/10 nitro on-road, would it be better to just jump into a 17.5T class instead of the 540?
I see how it would close the gap in terms of speed, and I've had a look around for 17.5T combo's and this is the only one I like:
I can get a Novak Havoc 17.5 SPEC with SS Pro Brushless motor for about AU$180, which seems like a really nice combo but a question I have for that is would I be able to use that speedy with a Hobby Wing 3000Kv/13T motor if I wanted to?

I'm really liking the price of the Havoc 17.5 Spec combo, so I think I'll end up getting that in the future.

You don't need anything super complex to run a silver can. A cheap ESC will be just as good as an expensive one.

That's true, but what about 17.5 class? Id rather be in that then in 540 now that I think about it. More competitors in it than 540, well, maybe they're about equal.

Silver cans are cheap, but because they can't be rebuilt, you'll have to keep buying new ones. So the cost is added over time.

With brushless systems, the cost is mostly up front. But they're a lot more consistent in performance and reliability.

It looks like you have two choices, pay now or later.

Well, Im going to get the ESC for the silver can ( only $25 ) and then if I feel too slow for 540 or the motor pops, the Im going to get the Novak Havoc combo later on and start racing in the 17.5 class.
