The problem is; I don't want to run a bunch of classes at wcics events. Makes it way too hectic and takes the fun out of it. But I like all of the cars/classes; I want one of each! Lol.

I'll have to spend more time talking to Ivan Chan to see how he manages to run all of the classes, do well, and still have time to Marshall a whole bunch.

ViperZ 03-20-2015 07:49 AM

Oh..? Here I thought you wanted to run all the classes. Not sure what gave me that idea...

I think you need a WGT, just so I'm not all alone with Nick

I ran usgt last sunday (PF LFA body), and then switched the car over to 21.5 CTA setup on tuesday night and ran it at practice on wednesday. Same lap times. The ride usgt tires have less grip but are easier to drive on. They are much more progressive on breakaway. The two classes are comparable to the point that we run them on the track at the same time in our club. :)

What kind of tires do you use for CTA?!? When I raced at the International Carpet Challenge, the handout HPI tires we had were horrific, and they were slicks! So if the USGT tires are worse than *that*, I'd stay far away! ;)

This is definitely my future favorite USGT body...

For CTA we use the vintage threaded HPI tires #4793 Front & #4797 Rear

For USGT we well be running Ride #RIE24025 Front & Rear

Has anyone put serious effort into running a FWD car in USGT? Ive run it a little bit locally but unsure how it would do at a large event.

I'm interested too

I was able to finally track down a NIB VBC FF Twelve but haven't had the time to get it together and try it out. I did dable with the Thunder Tiger 2wd touring car For a bit. I had fun but need to transplant a better front end and then give it another go. But I am also interested in hearing from anyone else who has run either FWD or 2WD(RWD) USGT.

And yes I know the latter is not technically legal. But still fun and challenging at the club level.

If I have to pick the better performing tire just by looking, I'd have thought the USGT ones would be better, so this is quite surprising to me.

I did have a lot of handling problems at ICC, due to the tires being so much bigger, messing up the ride height and droop settings, and not really finding good settings for those...

The large diameter of the cta tires does indeed mess with setup. Arm and axle angles get super funky when you run the big tires and lower the car to the 5mm min. After a bunch of events, the inserts break down and the tires turn into soggy slicks. Lots of grip but lots of inconsisten handling and lots of traction rolling.
The usgt tires dont seem to stick as well. I think they are a harder compound, and a very different type of rubber. The hpi d-compound seems very "vinyl-esque". I don't have much experience with the usgt tires though, so maybe I'll find them to get faster with age. :)

If the USGT spec tires are worse that the HPI slicks, you are not breaking in the USGT tires correctly. Lots of different ways but check out Paul Lemieux's thread on how he prepares his tires. I use his method and the first time my new tires were on the track this weekend, the car was hooked up and fast - no need for arm up laps.

ViperZ 03-20-2015 05:55 PM

Dennis, the USGT tires will probably require some wear in to make a fair comparative analysis to the VTA treads. I'm so looking forward to running them.

And you getting a WGT :D

DBM 03-20-2015 06:07 PM

I wore in my usgt tires by running them for about 40 minutes on asphalt. :) my car was having issues the day that I ran it in usgt trim, so maybe it will get faster. Will find out whrn I convert the car back to usgt trim after the Calgary WCICS race next weekend.

The HPI non-belted slicks were very sticky, but inconsistent and lots of traction rolling. I was getting a bit desperate, so I tried putting some CA glue on the sidewalls, which, a bit to my surprise, did help visibly.

The USGT tires look like they might indeed need some breaking in, and be fairly limited grip, if they're of a hard compound, but should last long. Could work okay on an outdoor track on a hot day?

I think I'll stick to my Sorex 28 favourites, and the currently popular Ride Rex30 control tire, thanks! ;)

I really wanted to do that this season, but my focus as of late has been with other hobbies. I may try it in the fall. The only problem I see is that you are "encouraged" to run fwd bodies. I kinda disagree with that because a lot of people are running rwd bodies with 4wd touring cars. I may try both though and see.

I run the HPI 7340. I dont mind running it because its different and it works decent on carpet and pavement. It has a bit too much rear traction on my Sakura FF. I have to be careful with body choice because most dont have enough front bumper room to fit everything in.

I am still working on taking weight out though, I am down to 1240 grams with a shorty.
