Main secret to success in 540 is clean driving. With 540 geared high, it takes so long to reach race speed after a smack you'll be losing 50' to the other guy for every time you hit. Just a few hits and you'll be a lap or 3 behind.
But if it showed better results than the other motors, should'nt that still be better than the others when there is a load on them ?

Post I dunno if this helps but.....

the fastest 540's I've seen sure they were lightly oiled after each race but before that and after the motor had cooled down they were run completely submerged in CRC Lectra clean so all the crud was flushed out then flushed again until the fluid ran clear.

Oh and having enough batteries to only use them once a day and keeping them in the refrigerator over night and chilled at the track helps for more punch too but you probably know that already.
