Associated 611 Quasar Pro Charger Recalled!
#61
I received 2 e-mails about the recall today. Here they are:
1.)
Product Safety Recall Notice:
#611 Reedy Quasar Pro Charger
Due to a potential safety concern, there is a voluntary recall of the Reedy
#611 Quasar Pro Charger.
Two problems, a defective fuse and a program error, make the charger unsafe
to use, particularly with high capacity NiMH cells. On rare occasions, an
internal component failure, or an external electrostatic discharge event
("Carpet Sparks"), can cause the charger to overcharge these battery packs.
This can result in leakage, overheating, or even explosive separation of
cells in the pack. We are aware of three cases involving the Quasar Pro
charger and GP3300 cells, where cells have exploded.
This recall applies to all #611 Quasar Pro Chargers manufactured up to
March 1, 2004. They can be identified by ay of the following:
1) Display shows "QUASAR PRO VERSION 1.0" when first turned on.
2) No barcode label on the underside of the charger.
3) A barcode label on the underside with the numbers "611" or "611A".
If you have this charger, you must discontinue its use immediately, and
contact Associated Electrics, Inc., to arrange for corrective service at no
charge to you.
Corrections for the problem have been developed and tested. New Quasar Pro
chargers, and chargers that have been corrected, are designated #611B, and
display "Version 2.1" when turned on.

Will Associated. . . .
I already asked, FED-EX and UPS how much would it cost to send my Charger. its US$98.00!!! Thats about a price of a good second hand NOVAK Mill Pro/LRP Pulsar Sport/Pitbull!!!
I'll be willing to shoulder the trip of my charger statesside-- But will they pay for it to send it back to me?

I don't see anywhere on the form where it says they won't ship overseas.
That is horrible to have to pay almost $100 to ship. I got lucky...only $10 to ship UPS...included packing and getting there today.
I will post again when I hear something about the status.
This is my only charger and I am sure not buying another one!!! They better be a quick turnaround.

I still think their compensation packages are incredibly poor. 10 pairs of 766's? A motor nobody seems to have heard of (out of an RTR maybe?) $15 of DIRECT purchases of THEIR products?
I understand not being able to refund everyones money. Afterall, they are a small company which would really suffer from a hit like that, but shipping is going to cost about $10 - $15 for us in the states, and they're offering me crap I won't even use? I'm basically being forced to pay $15 for some brushes that I could already buy for less at any online hobby shop, and am out of a charger for a week.
Associated should raise it's prices on the next batch of Quasar Pro's or add a buck to cost of the TC4, but don't screw your customers for a second time and then offer them a slap in the face to make up for it.

lol, i have heard of the pulse r. it came with the rtr AE B3
it was kinda pathetic.
to buy 10 pairs of brushes over here it will cost 30-40 GBP which is kinda lot for brushes
its strange though.
people are on about the version 1 going wrong (but the version 2.1 is fine)
but yet both the quasers i had were 2.1's.
but both chargers had faulty fuses, and they said 'charger to hot' on the screen but the charger was stone cold...it was the batts that were going mental.
a pack actually slightly melted my pit table coz they were so hot
anyway, i am glad mine went faulty and i got credit from CML before the recall (or i would of had to pay lots of money for shipping)
and i am very happy with my millenium pro
hope it all makes sense

I just don't buy into this crap that all they have to do is replace a fuse. Screw that, I want new software for my troubles. I want mine to read 'Version 1.2" or whatever...
The RC industry as a whole has a bad habbit of screwing those who commit to a product early. You buy a kit out of the first batch and you find out later that it comes with a new motor mount, or a larger fuel tank, or differently designed arms. You buy a charger early in its lifecycle and you find out it has software and fuse issues.
For as much trouble as this has cause Quasar Pro owners, and all the problems the charger has...
-screen scrambling
-overheating packs
-can't touch it without grounding yourself first
-bad fuse
-bad software
...they should make sure these things are fully functional before they return them.
Anyways...I've bought a LRP Pulsar Competition now, so as soon as I get my Quasar Pro back, I'm selling/trading it to get a 20amp discharger and a N-Power supply.

Gotta love this...
I just called Team Associated and was informed the chips they need for the replacement have still not arrived yet. They also have no ETA so we could be waiting awhile.
I am thinking a will buy a new charger and sell this one when it gets back.
One this is for sure...never buying Reedy junk again.

FOR UK OWNERS
Found this on another forum. Hope it's true
"All,
To try and put everyones mind at ease, I spoke to CML directly and can confirm the following statement to be 100% accurate as far as CML informed me.
This fault is only on the 110v chagers and NOT the 220v ones sold in the UK.
UK Spec chargers are not affected by this problem and do not need to be sent back.
Before anyone decides to question me on this, I am only repeating part of a conversation I had with CML today. As a Quasar owner, I was concerned abou this, which is why I called them. I am in the IT industry and have been for 18 years, so I am accustomed to these things being blown out of all proportion on the net. This is why I pay no attention to the hype most things get - good or bad. The only way to be 100% sure is to speak to someone in the know, which I have done and am passing on the comments.
If there was a problem with these chargers in the UK, dont you think CML would make sure that everyone knew about it. Then put in place a procedure for returns, exchanges or refunds..........I think they would.......
So calm down, dont beleive the hype and get charging......."
