68 mph micro
#121
Hey Kufman,
The sheer weight of the cells reallydoes keep the 540 micro planted. They are 4/5 Sub C cells and are much heavier than the typical 2/3a cells that micro drivers typically use.
The foams believe it or not can handle pretty substantial speeds. My 540 micro with a 14 turn motor was capable of yanking on some 1/10 nitro cars. I would estimate the speed being between 50 and 60 mph. The foams never came off. Depending on how hard you drive the car, the foams will chunk and at that point, you replace them.

you could spin them up to 150mph and they would stay on
My argument isn't that the car will go airborne, my argument is that the rough surface will slow your car down tremendously. The calculations are no longer valid do to the larger amount of rolling friction caused by the relative roughness of the surface. A 2mm roughness is much more significant for a micro tire than it is to a 1/10th tire of any kind. There for, the calculations shown earlier are invalid.
Also, you ask if I know what a micro is. Yes I do, I owned one for about a year and raced it on carpet and also on blacktop.
Intellignetsia,
Nitro cars aren't that fast, I have outrun them with stock motors in my TC3.
One further thing. at 68 MPH you are traveling 99.73 feet per second and you even said you don't have 100 feet of range. To go from 0 to 68 and back to 0 in less than a second isn't possible and you video proves it.

The raod I drive it on is smooth, and it doesn't slow the car down any.
A TC3 with a stock motor goes about 20 mph, and nitros go around 50 mph. Nitros aren't that slow.
Also, I'm not going 68 mph for 2 minutes, so I don't need an entire highway to run it. I run it a total of about 4 seconds each way, including accelerating, hitting top speed, and braking. To brake, i can put the car sideways and stop it in a few feet from 70 mph.
Also, I didn't say I don't have 100 feet of range. I just can't do a trap that big. I said I would try a 50 to 60 foot trap when I get my new front diff.

I sure do. And those are for my reference to calculate the speed.

So you are telling me that your 1/10 electric car with a stock motor will outrun a nitro TC3 with a .12 Novarossi? I highly doubt that.
I don't know what the exact top speed of some of these 540 micros, but I can say that they are very very fast. I am not talking scale speed, I am talking real mph.
I was using a cheap Speed Gems 14 turn motor in my car and it was insanely fast. It is hard to imagine a car this small going even faster than it already was.
I ran my 540 micro probably 30 times and I can honestly say that I never flipped it. I ran the car at SoCal Raceway, Freedom Park, as well as miscellaneous parking lots. The stability of the car was never an issue.
I don't know what's up with ajg's video but to see these cars in action is quite the spectacle.

AJG,
My guess is that the cones are about 40 feet apart (1st to last) and by video fames you car is going 35 mph.
Intell,
I don't doubt these cars could be fast, but the vids I have seen so far are not. Also, a two speed and a 10 hp motor will not help a nitro turn. I didn't say I could outrun them in a straight line.

Kufman,
It is irrelevant whether or not you stated that you could outrun a nitro car in a straight line. The nature of this thread implies that we are referring to straight line speeds.
Yes, these cars can definitely be fast and with the right motor in the right hands it will be fast!

There used to be videos of this event but they were basically speed runs around an oval. Atleast you can see in the pictures what was involved and how much effort it took to break 100kph and then some....
Asurda Speed Challenge
I suppose I can just enter a micro and smoke them all huh?
Edit: Also, the fastest cars that were measured with a radar gun at the recently held Reedy Race hit the low 40's mph. Hmm, again, maybe I shoulda raced a micro...

I don't know to whom that comment was directed but (with all physics aside) common sense should tell us that a 1/18 scale car is not capable of reaching the top speeds of a 1/10. I am sure that ajg is aware of this as well (at least I hope so).
I believe that this thread was created so showcase how fast a car this small is capable of going. He has yet to actually prove this but cut him some slack, he is doing his best.
