It seems hard to believe that a 2wd pancar with no suspension can outhandle a 4wd touring car.

My current setup is a Bolink 2000 pan car but I was looking to switch to a TC3 chassis for more handling.

Is this a bad idea?

Forgive my ignorance, but what advantages to pan cars have over, say a TC3 4wd? Which one handles BETTER? Which one can be FASTER?

I have a pan car that I'm running a robotic platform on right now. I was hoping to switch to a 4wd car with modern suspension enhancements to make it faster. My robot has to run on the carpet, on a very tight course....

a 4wd should be smoother to drive because better suspension, But a pancar is faster of the Direct Drive. The motor is going straight to the rear wheels, in 4wd theres drag to get all four tires moving and all the gears.

But Pancars arnt Legal to run w/ 4wd Touring Cars (correct me if wrong)

Pan cars are faster.

Pan cars are lighter

Pan cars have less drag

Pan cars are closer to the ground (lower CG)

I race pan cars in the TC class.

Just look at the lap times.

they are two toatally different cars and classes.. a pan car properly setup will be hands down faster...

i race oval pan cars on a profesional level... there is no way a gear boxed car with the same motor batteries ect will ever be as fast as a pan car will... there is way to much movement on a sedan then a pan car... ie more weight, rotating mass. power loss tot he wheels ect....

even a full indepentent suspension direct drive car will not be as fast,,..

u mat think pan cars dont have suspension but they do

our race cars actually have 3 shocks and two springs... we cant have independent because of the straight rear axle... but we dont need it.. the current suspensions on todays pan cars are plenty..


so yes a pan car should be faster...they have more traction. and just straight out speed...

On a tight technical course with lots of twisty corners and very little straight.....both cars being equal....sedan/touring cars will outperform pan car .......

here are the laptimes from the snowbirds fopr mod sedan and mod 12th scale... they are very close.... but u have to remember the 12th scale guiys are geared for 8 minutes..... if they geared for 5 minutes there time would be faster.....


sedan lap time for josh cyrul were 10.7 lowest to 11.4 last lap

12th scale lap times were 10.5 lowest 11.4 last lap

if u were running 5 minutes like sedans u could gear alot higher because of the time factor.... and with 10th scale pans u can also gear them higher to .. mostly the tire size has alot to do with that

Yeah apples to oranges. 1/12 scale has 4 cells, sedans run six cells

Same lap times. Hmmm 1/10 pan cars run 6 cells.

On a tight twisty track, the pan car has less mass and can turn or change lines much quicker. It can also be geared to accelerate quicker.

They are different, I prefer the pan cars because of ease of maintnence. Yes we do have suspension. Our cars can also be set up to have reactive caster so it changes as the car goes into the turn.

Last year I ran in a parking lot race, at the last race I had the ONE fastest lap time of all the TCs with a RC10L30 with batteries in a 3_3 setup. I am not that good of a driver.

ahh yes u are right they were also runing 4 celll 6 cell would also be a huge difference.. good catch

i'm getting two different responses... someone said the touring car would be fastest through tight stuff... someone else (most) say the pan car is faster...

If so, what is the touring car better at, why did it become so popular recently?

On a tight course with low traction, a 4WD will be faster.

But if you can run at topspeed constantly, a direct drive will be quicker.

Same motor, same gearing, same batteries.



I took a Tamiya GrpC car out on the track the other day, all stock.
As a comparison, I also put a SportTuned motor & same gearing
into a modern 4WD Tamiya.

The 2WD will hold its own against the 4WD... but boy do you need
more skill to keep it on the track. No such thing as just hammering
it out of corners, its finesse driving all the way.

i agree, pancars are a FASTER car all round, touring cars /sedans are just to, well complicated and the amount of energy wasted in diffs, 4wd ,etc etc etc means it just cannot keep up witha pan car............... end of.

PAN cars are faster then TC's .. there lighter ,have only 2 wheel drive and kick some butt on the track .... I think even a very well set up TC will lose against a pan car .. And they do have better areo bodies than TC's ... my cent and a half..
