Default Volkswagen Thing

The other day at the hobby shop, the girlfriend informs me that if i can find a Volkswagen Thing body and I paint it purple with pink flowers, she'll come to the track and race in club events with me.

So, for those more knowledgeable than myself, anyone every heard of a 10th scale VW Thing body?

Or heck, any scale Thing body? I've been told that Tamiya may have had a Kubelwagen body at some point in time, but a search of their website only shows a 1/16 scale static model.

I'd really like to see her live up to that claim, so if anyone has any ideas.... heck, even a toy Thing that i could send to someone for vacuumforming would be great.

Thanks all!

OMG !! You wre serious. I think that Tamiya body was the only one I've ever seen. I'll try to get you a link.

Tough to find and you'd have to "civilianize" it.

I found a place that sells VW Thing 1/24th scale models. You could maybe scale it up somehow or try to mount the body on a Kyosho Mini-z

www dot dastank dot com slash VW-Thing-Toys.htm
(I'm not allowed to post URLs yet since I'm still a newb)

HPI used to make Volkswagen Beetle bodyshell if that's what you're after...

or the red one is from Tamiya...

HPI Beetle Cup racer is discontinued. Volkswagen was not agreeable on the license. Thats the story. Im still cursing over the loss of that shell.

As already mentioned HPI makes the Bettle RS body, or did make it, i also know that Protoform made a Bora/Jetta body for 1/10 th touring.

You're in for some HEAVY modification to convert a beetle or dune buggy body into a VW thing.

I believe the girlfriend has been paying attention and has given you quite a difficult task to call her out

And if your girlfriend is anything like my wife, building your own wouldn't be "finding" one, hence, deal off

Thanks so far everyone!

Yes, the GF is quite discriminating when it comes to Volkswagens.... but i don't think she'd object to home built vs. found. Making my own might score me some serious points.

Hmmmmm..... thanks for that thought Tim! I've made other RC stuff from scratch, why not a body!

I'm guessing .030 lexan?

If that's the case, you might be better off building in styrene. You'd have to paint from the outside, but lexan fogs any time you glue, so a styrene body would look better in the end, IMO.

Otherwise, if you have someone that can vacu-form for you, building a mold would let you make more than one body once you were done. You'd need to work with whatever company would do the pulls for you to see what material you'd need to make the mold out of though, I'm at a loss on that one.

If you undertake this little project in lexan or styrene, be sure to keep us updated.

If i build one it will be with the intent of making a mold and figuring out how to pull more.

But you're right, styrene might work better. Too bad i never learned to sculpt. I can throw pottery on a wheel, but i never learned to sculpt.

Forget the VW and don't bring your girlfriend to the track. Almost guaranteed you'll be leaving the track earlier than you would like. Plus you'll have about a dozen dirty old men giving her the visual shakedown.

She may be telling you in a very subtle way that she really doesn't want to go to the track with you.....and if that's true, you're better off leaving her at home...at least on race days.
