Tamiya FF03

So I should have my ff03 by Friday. Gonna drop my rs and a 17.5 lying around in there. Gonna gear it 60/39 with 48p gears which will give me an FDR of 4.0. This sound like a good starting point?

The problem I foresee with 17.5 is
You really start to push the handling of the the RCGT class.
Bodies, wings and tires will become much more of an issue.
And we're back to cars that are more about speed than a mix of both scale & speed.
I understand 17.5 is the "Stock Spec" motor of choice for many racers, but this class has a chance to be different.
just my $.02

At my club (in UK) we have decided 17.5 is no longer a STOCK class as cars have reached 46mph, so we are introducing 21.5 with timing as STOCK and letting 17.5 with zero timing run in it for now.
21.5 with timing is similar speed to the HPI Saturn 20T motor, so faster than a Silver can motor.
Hopefully this will bring back 2wd cars as they don't have as much problem getting traction with the lower power, then I can race my FF03 again
(currently running M14LP in 50+mph 13.5 timing class)

I'm perfectly happy with my 21.5 in both FF03 and F1. NO TIMING!
Timing has blown it for the stock classes.
Actually, if it has timing/boost it aint stock.
I guess since there was the technology it had to be flaunted tho.
Now it's here and it has found it's place if we continue to choose it.
We just have to keep going to slower motors in order to maintain a stock class level of performance as long as boost is chosen.
The local offroad tracks each look at boost differently.
OCRC allows 13.5 no boost to run with 17.5 boosted.
West Coast does not.
I like the idea of boost and no boost together with the correct motor choice.
Now back to the power in the FF03,
why Tamiya chose an 18 turn (17.5 speeds) is not clear unless in their neck of the woods that is the power level of choice.
If it is and that's the majority pick, I'm all in.

The only thing worse than not having a spec is jumping from one to the next in rapid succession. That chases people away for sure. Let's just race and have fun until the dust settles a bit.

So does an FDR of 4.0 sound about right for a non boosted 17.5?

It really depends on what type motor and ESC. I ran a Tekin with a Novak 17.5 and it seemed to like the 4.0 (motor temp 125F.) but you could get into the mid three's. The LRP SPX seems to like 5.0-5.2 ratio. GTB with Novak motor your looking into the low3's. The Speed passion also like it in the 3s I'm not even getting into track size which will change ratio.
I hope that will the get you in the ballpark based your combo.

FF03 looks tempting
Haven’t raced in years, then today I noticed Tamiya had released a decent FWD chassis again. Looks very tempting. I also have a Mugen MTX 3, but I still liked racing my stock FF01 while I could still get parts for it.
How many people here run their FF03 with soft springs up front and hard on the rear? I noticed one photo on here with such a setup. My first on-road car was a 2nd hand FF01 from a guy who set some of the fastest lap times in the local stock (silver cans and Sport Tuned) Tamiya class. He had it set up like this. I left the chassis as it was and eventually I was setting some of the fastest laps of the day, too, once I learnt how to drive it. Turn in was nice and I never had a problem with lift-off oversteer.
Nice to see Tamiya re-releasing the old FWD bodies again. I have a Toyota Exiv and an Alfa 156. Both looked great before race days took their toll. The new Civic body looks great. Does it have have proper front and rear light mounts or are Tamiya’s decals getting better?
