Ok... I will try to make it simple. The pack that vented was probably raced or cycled and should have been taken down to close to 5.4 volts on a discharger or a T35 etc. before being placed in the Novak tray. If I remember right the max amperage the Novak will draw is 2.7 amps per cell. This is a much lower load on the cell than the race or the discharger after the race. Even if the Novak tray malfunctioned the worse I can see happening is it would take the cells to zero. Neither will cause the cell to vent. The damage to the cell happend before it was put on the tray... or it was put on backwards as mentioned in another post.
Or more likely... the cell just up and died... it happens

I would like to know if the tray accepts packs with the corally style tubes on the packs? Also, is the positive terminal on the upper left or upper right of the tray? Thanks.

yes...you'll have to adjust the end tabs...
the positive is on the lower right....

Anyone else finds the front face of the tray slides around a bit and sometimes can pinch the botton so it's stuck on? I've had it happen twice and I'm worried one day when I stick a pack on the plastic front face is going to rip the button off.

There are at least 5-6 Novak Smart tray for auction on e-bay in the toys & hobbies/radio control section. The bid prices ranges from $51-89.

Default Maybe A Dumb Question

When you place your battery on the tray, should the battery bars be in contact with the tray contacts ? If not how do you fit your battery ?

Default Did I get a bad discharger?

Ok I just got the tray.

I put in a a Fukuyama saddle pack and it started to heat up very fast in about 2 - 3 seconds. Smoke started to come out so I took the pack out and I noticed one of the cells got damaged (the ink on the label got smeared). I am 100% sure I placed the pack in the tray correctly polarity wise.

Anyhow, I thought it might be a fluke, so I tested a different pack...again a saddle pack. Same thing started to happen...the pack got really hot after 2 seconds, so I had to take the pack out.

What gives? I am sure I placed the pack in correctly polarity wise. No way I would have made a mistake like that twice.

Pay close attention to the polarity of the pack and the orientation of the battery bars:

The positive terminal should be on the bottom right hand corner of the tray, the negative terminal should be at the bottom left-hand corner of the tray.

If you look closely at the front of the tray, you will see little pictures of battery bars...these should line up with the battery bars on your pack.
