Default Shelf Life of Foams

I bought a couple of used cars off craigslist. The 1/10 scale (TC4) was run once and the 1/18 (M18) was never run. Both car had several sets of foam tires. I have run the cars in street. The tires seems to be losing foam at a high rate and really do not have any traction. So the question is, do the foam tires have a usable shelf life or is this normal for this type of tire? The tires are probably 4 or 5 years old. I have no idea how they were stored or the firmness of the tires.

The question is really about shelf life of the tires and if high wear rates are normal for asphalt.

Foam tires really don't like the abrasion from city street quality asphalt. They also don't work well when there is any dust on the surface.

To answer your other question, if the foam feels dried out then you're most likely looking at getting some more tires.

I suppose, if you store them in a cool place they could last 4-5 years. I've got the original Serpent foam for 10th 238mm And 8th Vector bought in '93 for measurement referance and are just as soft as they brand new.

If they are old, and dry, they will chunk off when used. Won't really know when you try. As for M18 old style Foam and new style are probably still good.

Don't throw them out just yet. Try 1) washing them with warm water and detergent, dry with paper towel 2) next coat the surface with WD-40 and store them (always sealed) 3) after a few weeks/months, take them out, wipe off the excess WD-40 let them dry and apply a small amount of sunscreen. For some brands, this works quite well.

If these tires aren't all that precious too you, then this probably isn't worth it. just buy some new ones.

Probably depends of the type of tyre. I have a couple of boxes of Pro10 tyres from many, many years ago, and wanted to use them for my GT10 car. I stuck them on the tyre truer and took a bit off the surface and they are now all fine! Ideal!!

I would get a set of HPI xpatterns for running in the street, they sell them remounted on chrome rims.
