LOSI XXX-S, Tips and Tricks, Open Mod, etc

I found this forum because I am planning to buy my son a brushless upgrade for his Losi XXX-S for a Christmas present. From reading the forum, I have determined that he will need one of the Spur Adapters that Fathead is going to manufacture as well as the Brushless motor and speed control. I am new to brushless in cars, but have experience with brushless motors in RC planes. Does anyone have any recommendations for a brushless motor setup in the Losi XXX-S? What is the recommended pinion and spur gear, the motor KV rating, the number of turns, etc.? I am leaning towards a sensored motor to smooth the acceleration (should be easier on the belts).

I'd say check out the Speed Passion 17.5 combos, very affordable and really good performance. They're sensored and very smooth. As far as how to gear it,get the adaptor and a small spur/big pinion combo. You'll need to get somewhere around a 3.5- 3.8 fdr. To get your fdr it's spur divided by pinion times the internal(xxxs is 1.83 internal)ratio. Any questions feel free to ask away!

Would the aftermarket belts benefit from a bigger pulley or smaller pulley?, I thought I read something about a mod needed with them.
I'm thinking of something a bit more exotic than just straight delrin is all, even with the stock 23T pulley there is very little meat left for the spur screws to screw into, so was thinking about doing alumiunium 'backplate' with delrin pulley fitted to that, would allow easy changing of the pulley size.
