braking?

I am getting back into racing after a 20 year absence. Things are very different.

I was observing a 1/12 scale carpet road track race yesterday and noticed some cars were able to significantly reduce their speed when cornering. Do these cars have brakes or is it just the dialing in of the ESC that creates the drag?

Thanks for any answers.

No 1/12 scale cars have brakes, other than what is inherent in the motor / ESC combo. Brushed motors (almost obsolete now, as everyone has moved to brushless) have natural "drag" brake. Brushless motors have much less natural drag brake. Today's ESCs (like the Tekin RS) have settings for drag brake, to provide some level of braking when you let off of the throttle. This simulates the natural braking effect of a brushed motor.

Conversely, the Tekin ESC also has "push control" to apply a minimal amount of throttle to the motor to counteract the drag brake, which allows the car to roll more after you let off the throttle. It's all personal preference as to how you configure these settings in the ESC.
