we tried spec, but if you are not willing to police every aspect of it, people will find loop holes to win. Hard to deal with people that think it's no fun if they can't win.
You can also add the system of swapping motors/batt. The first place car's motor/batt will be swapped with the last place and so forth. That way, the only thing they can blame is their driving (and the mechanic).

Bingo! Cut down the traction to the bare minimum. Even if you had the extra punch or speed in your motor, it wouldn't matter if you didn't have the equipment to put it down to the ground. Find the right tire, have everyone run it, and you'll be set.
