Why continue beating yourself up? It looks like you've already made your chose.

You should really consider a shaft drive if you're racing it in the rough. The belt systems are going to have issues with little rocks. Coming from offroad, its hard to appreciate how sensitive onroad cars are to rocks/pebbles/sand.

If you're open to the TA-05v2, then you ought to check out the TB-03. The kits are very similar but the TB-03 has a sealed transmission with a shaft drive.

Finally, I'd scout out for some big open areas where you could mark out a course with cones or something similar. Zipping up and down a street gets really old really fast and you're missing out on the fun of an onroad car if you arent weaving through a course of some sort. New school parking lots are a good bet for a nice surface plus they aren't busy when school is out.

7 cell hump packs will fit in most of these cars. However, you won't be able to use the stock battery straps. Personally, I've used the silicon wrist bands to hold them in with good results.

Yeah, I got spots picked out.

I think Ill have to settle on a brushed system with a nimh battery for now but then upgrade later.

Any recommendations for brushed motors and ESCs?

If you're going brushed, I'd just get something really cheap and use that until you are ready to upgrade to brushless. Get some used Traxxas brushed ESC off of e-bay and buy a new silver can motor. Tamiya's 540 silver can is like $17 off of Tower. You won't win any speed records but you'll have a lot of fun if you mark yourself out a nice and twisty course.

How much are you budgeting towards motor and esc?

maybe you should look at the novak havok brusless system. It's $150 and comes with a esc and 21.5 (may be wrong, but cant you get a 17.5 or 13.5 option also?). that should be plenty fast to slam into curbs with and if you pick the sport up next year you will already have a 21.5 and esc which will get you into VTA, and that very possibly will be the entry level race class at your track, but you really need to know what on road classes they race so you can buy stuff that will work in the future and not stuff that you think is cool and will be absolutly worthless to you when you deside to start racing.

What about the hot bodies cyclone S arnt they about $150 for the roller?

really cheap lipo charger imax b5 will charge at 5 amps and has built in balancer they can be found for about $50

$100. So I guess it seems plausible to bump it up $50 and get a Sidewinder system or Havoc.

Now I just need to decide on the car.

The Tamiya DF03RA seems like it might be my best bet.

Maybe a touring car later on next year.

My 2cents....

The DF03RA is pretty flexible. Starts as a Rally car , change the arms and it can be an off-road buggy. There's even a guy trying to convert one for VTA at our track. If you like rally cars This is a great choice. Does your LHS support Tamiya ...always helps

I would definitely recommend the Havoc esc/combo 21.5 -great starter motor and can be used in VTA if you go that route in the future. Comes in other combo and I think Novak even has a trade-in program ($15) for a different size motor.

Go LIPO - can't beat a Fightmax (zippy) 4000mah for $40 shipped (HobbyCity.com) as a starter battery. If that's too cheap check out the LIPO shootout on BIG SQuid RC .com

LIPO charger $50-$75 ( duratrax, triton, used ICE charger)

Go have fun!!!!
