Thumbs up 64 or 48 Pitch and why

Im looking for a few answers. one alot of racers have said stop using the 48 pitch and go to 64 but I havent gotton a good reason why. What are the advantages to running a 64 over a 48? dose the 48 have advantages to the 64 and since I went from a Xray to a TC3 what is a good all around Spur/Pinion combo for VTA with a 21.5 and a SpeedPassion GT2.0 speedo.

I have used 48dp for most of my racing, the only reason is I prefer the durability for this pitch of gears.

Others have used 64dp with no problems and it allows for a finer range of gear ratio.

Agreed. There's no difference between 48 and 64. The only thing that 64 allows you to do is achieve a more precise/desireable gear ratio. For all applications, 48 will be fine.

I also found 64 pitch to be more reliable than 48 pitch now that we running brushless.
Myself and a few other guys in mod used to strip our 48 pitch but since going to 64 pitch no hassles.
i was told by a engineer buddy that its due to more teeth per cm when compared to each other which makes 64 pitch have more contacting surface area.
Bonus is smaller increment gearing changes making for finer tuning for racing.
also a lot easier to get a variety of pinions and spurs locally compared to 48 pitch.

Also I want to add that 64 pitch gears are more efficient. I'm no mechanical engineer, but it has something to do with the gears meshing better which in turn is more efficient.

Try Precision Racing Systems 64 pitch 84 tooth spur and 44 to 50 tooth pinions for that car. You'll like them. The 84/50 is 4.2 right on the head. My car likes the 84/46 at RC Performance.

I run 48 for rough parking lot races...we just converted on of the 64p guys to 48p after losing a few spurs...

Gear ratio is almost the same. Mechanically 64T gears have more contact of surface, Making it quieter than the 48T.

My opinion of subject.

Have fun!

48 pitch tends to be more popular with the outdoor crowd, with the thinking that the teeth are more resistant to damage from stones, etc. The indoor crowd tends to favor 64 pitch for the better gear mesh, quieter, finer resolution over gear ratios (which comes in handy for maintaining rollout when running foams), etc. Personally, I only want to have one set of pinions to share between my TC and 1/12 scale cars.

I honestly don't know why Jeff's Kyosho ate up spurs at such a rate. I've had the same 0.4module (close to 64p) 105T spur on my Tamiya for 2 seasons with no problems. Same aluminum 30T pinion has lasted just as long. I even acidentally melted one spot on my spur with a soldering iron and it still runs quiet as new.

BTW: The finer pitch is slightly more effecient. This is why it runs more quiet. It's not enough to make you faster...

64 pitch gears are more sensitive to how close you mesh the gears. Too tight, or too lose, and you risk a strip. It will happen much easier with 64 than 48. Perhaps he is ignorant on the proper way to mesh pinion and spur? Or maybe he was just unlucky?

Maybe im the only one that finds this weird, but why did you go to a TC3 from an Xray?

I agree with this. Everyone runs for the most part 64 pitch in their touring cars at my track but I run 48 for the ease of the gear mesh as you have a little more room for error. I have plenty of gers and spurs so getting the gear ratio I want isn't a problem.

Overall I have always found 48 pitch to be more reliable overall with no loss in speedo and still efficent.
