tire truer

i have made adapters to turn down my 1/12 wheels on a shop lathe, my question is- what is the actual surface used to cut down foam tires on commercial truers? is it a blade, a grinding surface or a file surface? my other question is should i use traction compound when cutting down my tires to soften them up?
thanks-Sean

Sean,I made my own 1/12th arbor as well.As for a cutter, you could use a trimmed down jigsaw blade or the big $ carbide one from Hudy; http://www.hudy.net/xhudy/show.php?i...940dda99b12147 Now I have to make a holder. Jay.

Some truers also use sanding drums, with either a course sandpaper-like material or a course metallic file material.
