Default Anodizing

I know a few people here have anodized there cars different colors

Any suggestions on who's good, who's bad?

I want to get a few cars done in black.

Thanks

There are home anodizing kits out there. Maybe something to invest in? I think they range somewhere between 150-250? Who knows maybe you can make some money form it doing parts for guys at the track?

I'm not sure it cost to go to a real shop and get it done, so I don't even know if its worth it.

I had a complete kit along with about 20-25 shims of different sizes done.

I wanna say it was right around $100 for it all. But thier price is based on weight. I had to send them all the parts then they quoted me a price.

this may help you decide ..

be advised that you'll be much happier with the way it turns out if you strip and polish the bulkheads yourself. the 7075 that the mi3.5 uses has a grainy finish that seems to worsten by reanodizing alone.

You can just buy a black ring for 2 bucks, would be easier then stripping and polishing it?

Sounds good though. I wonder if the home ano will look nice. It might be worth it just to send the stuff out

Haha I like the purple, but blacked out looks pretty dang sick, especially with electronics to match

just the bulkheads. the purple stuff usually comes out alright.

also, consider leaving the bulkheads gunmetal. that looks pretty good too. i'd love to get them done with the hardcoat that the diffs have on them. the flat/army green would look military issued.

in general: most anodizers will strip your parts for you. the reason you'd want to do it yourself is to have control on the surface finish. if you sent it in matte, it's going to come back that way. if you send it in polished, ... (you guessed it) it's going to come back that way.

another thing to consider is the fact that a lot of the aluminum alloys are different for each part of the car and they anodize differently as a result. most of these commercial anodizers are pretty rough. they aren't going to go through a different process for 2024 as they do for 6061. that said, it's usually a waste to polish all of the tedius items, not knowing how they'll come out of the process.
