do lipos need to be balanced with every charge?
i have 2 lipo chargers, one with balancing and one with not, have 5 lipos and want to be able to charge with both chargers. is it ok if a lipo gets balanced every other charge or every third charge?

That said, it doesn't hurt to balance them whenever you feel like it. Every charge, every other charge, every 5th charge... whatever. If you don't balance them every time, it doesn't really matter.

I always charge balancing them, I used to have Orion that says that they don't need to be balanced at all, lost one 2400 pack and almost lost a 3800 pack.

I spoke to Thunder Power when I got into LiPo. They recommend for the best performance and long life, balance charge at 1C. Higher amp rates charge the pack faster, but have little effect on performance.

My orion 4800 platinum lipos are now 2 years old and still each cell is exactly the same voltage as the next.

I only have one battery and its a lipo. When i go to the track i balance them the first run of the day and just charge them the rest of the day without balancing them. I usually average about 8 runs a day. So just balance them once a day and you should be fine. Some people ive talked to at the track havent ever balanced their batterys since theyve owned them. I guess it more of what you like to do, but i feel safe balancing them frequently instead of letting one cell get charged more than the other and loosing my one and only battery. Just my opionion.

thank you for the replies.

Balancing is important, for lithium battery
Balancing will result the same as match battery like nimh does.
It will also depend on what lipo xxS pack if you are using more than 2S
Balancing is more required, cause of diffrent inner resistance each cell when you draw them. example nimh most of us using 4s to 6s... there fore requires
smart tray Discharger for equalizing on nimh.
on good quality Lithium battery, will draw the battery almost equaly therefore
some factory dosen't required balancing for their lipo battery.
Still Lithium balancing is usefull to cut-off/detect when it reach it's maximum voltage per cell. since Lithium is not allowed to be overcharged like nimh does.
it will also good to monitor each of your batteries condition per cell.
and it help to decide wich battery that still in good perfomance, without
having test under load.
note:
Balance charge on lipo will result in better performance at first start.
