I dont know if its better or not to place them like )( , personally I don't because I have a feeling that the outer rim of the inner washer would or might ride on the bearing shields instead of the outer rim of the bearing.

But it shouldn't be riding on either of them anyways, as the design is to have the thrust washer in contact with the inner race of the bearing so it rotates instead of rubbing on the outer race which may loosen up the diff nut when the diff is working as they spin in opposite directions.

Just my theory.
